IEC 61290-1-3:2015 applies to all commercially available optical amplifiers (OA) and optically amplified subsystems. It applies to OA using optically pumped fibres (OFA based on either rare-earth doped fibres or on the Raman effect), semiconductors (SOA), and waveguides (POWA). The object of this part of IEC 61290-1 is to establish uniform requirements for accurate and reliable measurements, by means of the optical power meter test method, of the following OA parameters, as defined in IEC 61291-1: - nominal output signal power; - gain; - polarization-dependent gain; - maximum output signal power; - maximum total output power. All numerical values followed by (‡) are suggested values for which the measurement is assured. Other values may be acceptable but should be verified. This part of IEC 61290-1 applies to single-channel amplifiers. For multichannel amplifiers, the IEC 61290-10 series applies. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2005. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - Detail description of most parameters has been described in IEC 61290-1 and removed from this part; - Description of maximum output signal power and maximum total output power are added. Keywords: optical amplifiers (OA), single-channel amplifiers, optical power meter test method This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 61290-1:2014.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61290-1-3:2015 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies test methods for optical amplifiers (OA) focusing on power and gain parameters. This part of the IEC 61290 series applies primarily to single-channel optical amplifiers and optically amplified subsystems, including devices based on optically pumped fibers (rare-earth doped fibers or Raman effect), semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA), and planar optical waveguide amplifiers (POWA).
The standard establishes uniform and accurate measurement procedures for key parameters using the optical power meter test method. This third edition, which supersedes the 2005 edition, includes important technical updates such as more detailed descriptions of maximum output power parameters.
Key Topics
IEC 61290-1-3:2015 provides thorough guidelines on measuring the following essential parameters:
- Nominal output signal power: Assessing the typical output power of a signal through the amplifier.
- Gain: Measuring the amplification factor provided by the OA.
- Polarization-dependent gain: Evaluating gain variation due to the polarization state of the optical signal.
- Maximum output signal power: Determining the peak permissible output signal power.
- Maximum total output power: Measuring the highest total power output, including amplified spontaneous emission.
Measurement Methodology
- The standard prescribes the use of a high-precision optical power meter setup (detailed in Figure 1 of the document), involving optical sources, optical couplers, power controllers, and variable optical attenuators.
- Optical sources used can be fixed-wavelength or wavelength-tunable, requiring narrow spectral width (typically less than 1 nm FWHM) and highly stable output power (less than 0.05 dB fluctuations).
- Suitable sources include DFB lasers, DBR lasers, external cavity lasers (ECL), and LEDs with narrow-band filters, ensuring spectral purity and consistency.
- The measurement setup also incorporates polarization controllers to assess polarization-dependent gain effectively.
Applicability
The measurement methods outlined are relevant for:
- Single-channel optical amplifiers.
- Various OA technologies including optically pumped fiber amplifiers, semiconductor optical amplifiers, and planar waveguide amplifiers.
- The standard does not cover multichannel amplifiers, which are addressed in the IEC 61290-10 series.
- Applicability to distributed Raman amplifiers is noted as requiring further investigation.
Applications
IEC 61290-1-3:2015 plays a critical role in industries and sectors where optical amplification is key, including:
- Telecommunications: Verification and quality assurance of optical amplifiers used in fiber optic networks.
- Optical component manufacturing: Standardized testing for product specifications, performance benchmarking, and compliance.
- Research and development: Facilitating consistent laboratory measurements and comparison across different amplifier technologies.
- Optical instrumentation: Calibration and validation of instruments relying on optical signal amplification.
- Subsystem evaluation: Ensuring reliable performance of amplified subsystems in integrated optical solutions.
The standardized approach ensures interoperability, reliability, and repeatability of measurements, fostering improved product performance and network robustness.
