IEC 61300-2-11:2023 is to ensure that the captivation or the attachment of the cable to the fibre optic devices or components, for example fibre optic closures, will withstand compressive axial loads likely to be applied during normal service. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2012. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) added Terms and definitions clause; b) removed severity table for closures; c) added recommended severity for tubes and cables without strength member attachment.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61300-2-11:2023 specifies basic test and measurement procedures for axial compression of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. The standard ensures that cable captivation or attachment to devices (for example, fibre optic closures and splice enclosures) will withstand compressive axial loads encountered in normal service. The 2023 third edition is a technical revision that adds a terms clause, updates severity guidance, and includes recommended severities for tubes and cables without strength‑member attachment.
Key topics and requirements
- Purpose: Verify mechanical integrity of cable attachment under axial compressive loads.
- Apparatus: Requires a fixed clamping device for the device under test (DUT), a movable clamping device for the cable (clamp length ≥ 3× cable diameter), a force generator, and a force gauge.
- Mounting geometry: Distance L between rear of strain relief and movable cable clamp ≤ 2× cable diameter to prevent buckling.
- Preconditioning and recovery: Precondition specimens for at least 2 h at standard atmospheric conditions; allow at least 4 h recovery after load removal.
- Load application: Apply axial compressive load smoothly, maintain for a minimum of 2 minutes (unless otherwise specified).
- Examination: Initial and post‑test visual inspections per IEC 61300-3-1, checking for cracks, deformation, loose or displaced parts, jacket/seal damage, fibre breakage, and optical degradation.
- Severity (recommended): The standard gives recommended axial loads (Table 1). Typical guidance:
- < 3 mm diameter - 10 N
- 3 to < 6 mm - 20 N
- 6 to < 10 mm - 50 N
- 10 to < 20 mm - 100 N
- ≥ 20 mm - 200 N
- Tubes & cables without strength member attachment - 10 N
- Closures: The document references recommended severities for closures (e.g., central strength member loads), and notes editorial changes in this edition regarding closure tables.
Applications and who uses this standard
IEC 61300-2-11:2023 is used by:
- Manufacturers of fibre optic closures, connectors, and passive components to validate cable attachment and strain‑relief designs.
- Test laboratories and quality departments for compliance and type‑approval testing.
- Design and reliability engineers specifying mechanical performance and fail‑safe attachment criteria.
- Spec writers and procurement teams who reference performance severities in tender documents. Practical applications include product qualification, warranty testing, field‑ready product verification, and failure analysis after axial compression incidents.
