IEC 61300-2-18:2023 details a procedure to determine the suitability of a fibre optic interconnecting device, passive component, splices or closure to withstand the environmental condition of extended high temperature that occur during operation, storage and/or transport. The test is intended to indicate the performance of such devices when exposed to heat of constant temperature over a given period. In general terms, this test provides a high temperature to induce potential failures due to softening and expansions. This procedure does not assess the ability of a device to operate during temperature variations; in this case, IEC 61300-2-22 is used. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2005. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - terms and definitions updated according to IEC 61753-1:2018; - test severities updated according to IEC 61753-1:2018; - simplification of the combination of temperature and exposure time.

Overview
IEC 61300-2-18:2023 specifies a standardized dry heat (high temperature endurance) test for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. The procedure determines whether connectors, splices, closures and passive modules can withstand extended exposure to constant high temperature encountered during operation, storage or transport. This third edition (2023) updates terms and test severities to align with IEC 61753-1:2018 and simplifies temperature/exposure time combinations.

- Scope: Verifies endurance to sustained heat; it is not a thermal-cycling test (see IEC 61300-2-22 for temperature variation testing).
- Test method: Specimens are placed in an environmental chamber and held at a specified constant temperature for a defined exposure time (conditioning → recovery → final examination).

- Measurements: Initial and final measurements and, where required, continuous or periodic monitoring of attenuation and return loss (recommended max 1 h intervals for performance tests).
- Preconditioning & recovery: Clean and stabilize specimens per IEC 61300-1, maintain at standard atmospheric conditions before and after test (minimum recovery ~2 h).
- Visual inspection: Final visual examinations per IEC 61300-3-1 to detect softening, expansion, damage to cables, seals, strain reliefs, or displaced/broken parts.
- Severity levels: Test severities defined by performance categories and aligned with IEC 61753-1. Examples from Table 1 include C: +60 °C / 96 h, OP: +70 °C / 96 h, E: +85 °C / 96 h - consult IEC 61753-1 for full normative values.
