IEC 61300-2-19:2012 details a procedure for determining the suitability of a fibre optic device to withstand the environmental condition of high humidity and high temperature which may occur in actual use, storage and/or transport. The test is primarily intended to permit the observation of effects of high humidity at constant temperature over a given period. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2005. It constitutes a technical revision. The changes with respect to the previous edition are to reconsider the severities and details to be specified. Keywords: high humidity and temperature, environmental condition The contents of the corrigendum of March 2020 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61300-2-19:2012 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies basic test and measurement procedures for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. This standard focuses on the damp heat (steady state) test, a critical environmental assessment to determine the resilience of fibre optic devices against prolonged exposure to high humidity and temperature.
The purpose of this test is to evaluate the effects of sustained high humidity and temperature on the physical and optical properties of fibre optic components. It helps ensure that these components can maintain performance and reliability during use, storage, or transport in humid tropical or similar challenging environments.
This standard represents the third edition, revising prior versions by updating test severities and specification details to reflect advancements and practical insights gained since the 2005 edition.
Key Topics
-
Scope of Test
The IEC 61300-2-19 procedure assesses the suitability of fibre optic devices to withstand damp heat conditions, with a focus on high humidity and elevated temperatures that may cause moisture absorption, swelling, mechanical degradation, or optical loss. -
Test Apparatus
The test requires an environmental chamber conforming to IEC 60068-2-78 specifications. The chamber must control and maintain specified temperature and relative humidity levels, with sensors to monitor conditions precisely. Special care is taken to prevent condensation directly on specimens and to avoid contamination from the chamber environment. -
Specimen Preparation & Positioning
Specimens are preconditioned under standard atmospheric conditions, cleaned per manufacturer guidelines, and mounted in a way that minimizes thermal conduction and protects them from radiant heat or contamination. -
Test Procedure
The test proceeds with stabilization of temperature and humidity inside the chamber, followed by a controlled exposure period. Optical performance measurements, such as attenuation and return loss monitoring, are carried out during and after conditioning, according to IEC 61300-3 series standards. -
Severity Levels & Monitoring
The severity parameters-including temperature, humidity, and exposure duration-are specified in a table within the standard to suit different device requirements. Optical monitoring ensures any degradation in key parameters is promptly detected.
Applications
IEC 61300-2-19:2012 is essential for manufacturers, testers, and quality assurance professionals working in the fibre optic industry, particularly for:
-
Reliability Testing
Assessing whether fibre optic connectors, adapters, and passive components maintain performance in high-humidity environments common in tropical climates or industrial settings. -
Product Development
Validating component designs to ensure mechanical integrity and optical stability against moisture-related stresses. -
Supply Chain and Storage Validation
Ensuring that fibre optic devices retain their specifications through transport and storage where they may encounter varying environmental conditions. -
Compliance and Certification
Meeting international quality benchmarks specified for fibre optic components, facilitating global market access and customer confidence.
Related Standards
IEC 61300-2-19:2012 references and complements several other IEC standards for comprehensive testing of fibre optic components:
- IEC 60068-2-78 - Environmental testing: Test Cab (Damp heat, steady state), which defines the environmental chamber requirements.
- IEC 61300-3-1 - Visual examination procedures for fibre optic devices.
- IEC 61300-3-3 - Active monitoring of optical attenuation and return loss changes during testing.
- IEC 61300-3-4 - Measurement methods for optical attenuation.
These standards together provide a full framework for verifying the durability and performance of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components in harsh environmental conditions.
By adhering to IEC 61300-2-19, industry stakeholders ensure that fibre optic devices maintain functionality and safety under harsh damp heat conditions-key for applications where optical communication reliability is critical. This standard’s rigorous environmental testing procedures help drive innovation and trust in global optical networks.
