IEC 61482-1-1:2009 specifies test methods to measure the arc thermal performance value of materials intended for use in heat- and flame-resistant clothing for workers exposed to the thermal effects of electric arcs and the function of garments using these materials. These test methods measure the arc thermal performance value of materials which meet the following requirements: less than 100 mm char length and less than 2 s afterflame after removal from flame, when tested in accordance with ISO 15025, procedure B (bottom-edge ignition) on the outer material, and the char length measured using a modified ISO method as described in Annex A. These methods are used to measure and describe the properties of materials, products, assemblies or garments, in response to convective and radiant energy generated by an electric arc in open air under controlled laboratory conditions. The materials used in these methods are in the form of flat specimens for method A and garments for method B. Method A is used to determine the arc rating of materials and material assemblies when tested in a flat configuration. Method B is used to measure garment response, not arc rating, to an arc exposure including all the garment findings, sewing thread, fastenings, fabrics and other accessories when tested on a male mannequin torso. Method B is also used for accident replication.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61482-1-1:2009 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies test methods for measuring the arc thermal performance value (ATPV) of flame resistant materials used in protective clothing. This standard is critical for ensuring the safety of workers exposed to the thermal hazards of electric arcs during live working conditions. The document focuses on assessing materials designed to withstand convective and radiant heat energy generated by electric arcs to prevent injury from burns.
The standard defines two main test methods:
- Method A: Determination of arc rating (ATPV or EBT50) of materials and material assemblies tested in a flat configuration.
- Method B: Evaluation of garment response on a mannequin, including all garment components, fastenings, and seams. This method is used for accident replication and does not provide an arc rating.
This standard ensures that materials used in flame-resistant clothing meet precise performance criteria-such as restricting char length and afterflame duration-to enhance worker protection.
Key Topics
- Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV): The core measurement indicating the energy threshold at which a material provides adequate protection against electric arc heat.
- Test Methods:
- Method A uses two-sensor panel setups for flat material testing.
- Method B involves four-sensor mannequins to measure garment response in simulated arc exposure.
- Material Requirements: Materials must exhibit less than 100 mm char length and under 2 seconds of afterflame after flame removal, complying with ISO 15025 Procedure B (bottom-edge ignition).
- Test Apparatus: Detailed specifications of panels, mannequins, calorimeters, electrodes, and data acquisition systems are included to ensure uniform testing conditions.
- Calibration and Maintenance: Procedures for apparatus calibration, sensor maintenance, and surface conditioning are explained to maintain test accuracy.
- Data Interpretation: Guidance is provided on analyzing heat transfer to the material, determining breakopen threshold energy, and calculating heat attenuation factors, with graphical plotting of sensor responses against standardized curves.
Applications
IEC 61482-1-1:2009 is essential for manufacturers and testers of flame resistant protective clothing intended for workers in electrical utilities, industrial maintenance, and other sectors where electric arc flash hazards are present. It enables:
- Assessment of fabric and clothing assemblies for arc flash thermal resistance, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
- Development of safer garments that reduce burn injuries by accurately quantifying arc thermal performance.
- Verification of garment designs including seams, fasteners, and accessories through Method B testing on mannequins.
- Risk management by providing reliable data to select appropriate PPE based on arc thermal energy exposure.
- Accident investigations by simulating arc exposure conditions on garments to evaluate protective limits.
This standard supports safety engineers, product designers, certification bodies, and industrial safety professionals aiming to mitigate arc flash hazards with scientifically validated protective clothing.
