IEC 61547:2020 which deals with electromagnetic immunity requirements, applies to lighting equipment which is within the scope of IEC technical committee 34, including apparatus such as lamps, luminaires, and modules. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition, published in 2009. This edition constitutes a technical revision This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - extension of scope with end-user replaceable modules and the combination of end-user replaceable module and independent auxiliary; - clarification of module testing in a host system; - increased ESD and surge test levels for road and street lighting equipment; - the introduction of ESD testing under normal operation and handling conditions; - removal of line to ground surge test for self-ballasted lamps ≤ 25 W.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61547:2020 - Equipment for general lighting purposes - EMC immunity requirements - is the third edition (technical revision) of the international standard that defines electromagnetic immunity requirements for lighting equipment within the scope of IEC Technical Committee 34. It replaces IEC 61547 (2009) and applies to lamps, luminaires, modules, independent auxiliaries and end-user replaceable modules intended for low-voltage or battery operation. The standard is written for domestic, commercial and light-industrial environments and is to be used together with relevant basic and product standards.
Key topics and technical requirements
IEC 61547:2020 specifies test phenomena, levels and performance criteria for electromagnetic immunity of lighting equipment. Key technical topics include:
- Performance criteria and objective assessment of luminous intensity and functional continuity during/after disturbance.
- Electrostatic discharge (ESD) tests, including new requirements for ESD under normal operation and handling conditions, and increased ESD levels for road and street lighting.
- Radio‑frequency (RF) electromagnetic field immunity testing at enclosure ports and control interfaces.
- Power‑frequency magnetic field immunity.
- Fast transients (burst) testing for signal/control and power ports.
- Injected currents / RF common‑mode tests on interfaces and supply ports.
- Surge immunity, with higher surge levels for road/street lighting and the removal of the line‑to‑ground surge test for self‑ballasted lamps ≤ 25 W.
- Voltage dips, short interruptions and voltage fluctuations tests to verify lamp/luminaire behavior under supply anomalies.
- Module testing guidance: clarification on testing end‑user replaceable modules within a host system and combinations of modules with independent auxiliaries.
Practical applications - who uses this standard
IEC 61547:2020 is essential for:
- Lighting manufacturers (lamps, luminaires, LED modules, drivers/auxiliaries) to design for EMC immunity and demonstrate compliance.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing immunity testing and conformity assessment.
- Product compliance and regulatory teams preparing technical files for market access.
- Lighting specifiers, system integrators and procurement teams who require robust lighting systems for public, commercial or industrial installations-especially for road and street lighting where immunity levels are raised.
- R&D and quality engineers who need to validate performance under electromagnetic disturbances and ensure safe, stable operation.
Related standards
- IEC 61000‑6‑1 (environmental immunity baseline for residential/commercial/light‑industrial) - referenced for environment categories.
- Other IEC/CISPR product standards that may define immunity for specific lighting or integrated systems (e.g., vehicle lighting, professional entertainment controls) - consult product‑specific standards where applicable.
IEC 61547:2020 is a practical reference for ensuring lighting equipment remains functional and safe when exposed to common and severe electromagnetic disturbances encountered in real installations.
