IEC 61558-2-3:2010 deals with the safety of ignition transformers for gas and oil burners. Ignition transformers incorporating electronic circuits are also covered by this standard. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1999. It constitutes a technical revision. The main changes consist of updating this part in accordance with IEC 61558-1:2005. This part has the status of a group safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104. The attention of National Committees is drawn to the fact that equipment manufacturers and testing organizations may need a transitional period following publication of a new, amended or revised IEC publication in which to make products in accordance with the new requirements and to equip themselves for conducting new or revised tests. It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 12 months from the date of publication. In the meantime, the previous edition can still be ordered by contacting your local IEC member National Committee or the IEC Central Office. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 61558-1:2005.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61558-2-3:2010 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that focuses on the safety requirements and testing protocols for ignition transformers used in gas and oil burners. This second edition supersedes the original 1999 edition, aligning with the consolidated framework of IEC 61558-1:2005. It emphasizes electrical, thermal, mechanical, and chemical safety aspects of single-phase air-cooled ignition transformers, including those with integrated electronic circuits.
Ignition transformers covered by this standard are designed to supply high voltages (up to 15,000 V a.c.) for gas and oil burner ignition systems. They are fixed, dry-type transformers intended for use with supply voltages up to 1,000 V a.c. and frequencies up to 500 Hz, with rated output currents not exceeding 500 mA a.c. These transformers support natural or forced air cooling and may feature encapsulated or non-encapsulated windings, serving critical roles in safe and reliable burner operation.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application:
Applicable exclusively to single-phase ignition transformers for gas and oil burners, including electronic variants. Does not cover external circuitry connected to transformer terminals. Emphasizes transformers used where double or reinforced insulation is not mandated by end product or installation standards. -
Safety Requirements:
Encompasses protection against electric shock, mechanical stresses, overheating, short circuits, moisture ingress, and electrical insulation integrity. Safety covers electrical, thermal, mechanical, and chemical dimensions to ensure reliable burner ignition. -
Testing Protocols:
Specifies standardized tests for rated output voltage, no-load voltage, short-circuit conditions, insulation resistance, dielectric strength, heating effects, mechanical strength, and protection against ingress of dust and moisture, among others. Includes guidelines for creepage distances and clearance requirements critical to insulation performance. -
Marking and Documentation:
Requires clear identification markings on transformers for operational ratings and safety information, aiding manufacturers, installers, and inspectors. -
Compliance and Implementation:
Updates reflect harmonization with IEC 61558-1:2005, ensuring interoperability and consistency with broader transformer safety standards. National committees and manufacturers are advised to allow a transitional period of at least 12 months before mandatory adoption.
Applications
IEC 61558-2-3:2010 is essential for manufacturers, testing organizations, and regulatory bodies involved with ignition transformers for:
-
Gas Burners:
Ensuring safe and reliable ignition in residential, commercial, and industrial gas burner systems. -
Oil Burners:
Providing secure ignition transformers tailored for oil burner applications, optimizing combustion processes and safety. -
Power Supply Units:
Integration into power supply systems for ignition modules, with adherence to safety and operational standards. -
Electronic Ignition Systems:
Applies equally to modern ignition transformers incorporating electronic circuits, supporting advancements in burner technology.
This standard supports product design engineering, quality assurance testing, certification processes, and ensures compliance with international safety benchmarks, ultimately enhancing product reliability and user safety.
