IEC 61757-4-3: 2020 defines terminology, structure, and a characteristic test method of an optical current sensor using the polarimetric method. It addresses the current sensing element only and not the additional devices that are unique to each application. Generic specifications for fibre optic sensors are defined in IEC 61757. As the specifications of optical polarimetric fibre current sensors required by each user vary depending on the application, this document does not define the required performance values. The required performance values are defined when designing a sensor according to the specific application. The contents of the corrigendum of June 2022 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61757-4-3:2020, part of the IEC 61757 series developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), specifies the terminology, structure, and characteristic test methods for fibre optic current sensors that utilize the polarimetric method. This standard focuses exclusively on the current sensing element and does not address any ancillary devices unique to specific applications. The methodology outlined supports manufacturers, designers, and end-users with a framework to qualify, evaluate, and compare optical current sensing components based on the magneto-optical Faraday effect. Performance values are provided as guidance for sensor designers according to practical application requirements.
Key Topics
- Fibre Optic Current Sensors: Sensors that use optical fibres and the Faraday effect to detect electric currents, providing an alternative to traditional electromagnetic methods.
- Polarimetric Method: Utilizes changes in the polarization of light induced by a magnetic field (Faraday effect) for current measurement.
- Terminology and Definitions: The standard introduces terms specific to fibre optic current sensing, such as Faraday element, maximum measurable current, and transient characteristic.
- Sensor Structure: Addresses the decomposition of the sensor system into sensor part (Faraday element), optical transmission part, and signal processing part.
- Test Methods: Procedures for characteristic testing are outlined, including measurement of light source power, detector input power, I/O characteristics, warm-up time, and performance dependency on various parameters.
- Classification: Distinction of Faraday elements based on their structure (waveguide or bulk) and material (magnetic or non-magnetic).
Applications
Fibre optic current sensors using the polarimetric method have a range of practical uses due to their immunity to electromagnetic interference, high precision, and safety advantages. Common applications include:
- Power Systems: Monitoring of electrical currents in high-voltage transmission lines, substations, and switchgear, where electrical isolation and compactness are valued.
- Industrial Automation: Precise current measurement for machinery diagnostics and process control.
- Metering and Protection: Use in advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and equipment protection systems where optical isolation and accuracy are requirements.
- Research and Development: Ideal for environments with strong electromagnetic fields, where conventional sensors may not be practical.
- Utilities: Suitable for outdoor environments and critical infrastructure where reliability and robustness against environmental factors are essential.
The guidelines and terminology defined in IEC 61757-4-3:2020 help ensure that fibre optic current sensors can be designed and tested consistently for these applications, streamlining sensor selection and integration processes for end-users and manufacturers.
Related Standards
To ensure compatibility and leverage established best practices, IEC 61757-4-3:2020 should be considered alongside other relevant international standards:

- Other Parts of IEC 61757: Cover various sensor types and applications, expanding on optical fibre sensing technologies.
- IEC Electropedia: Online resource for electrotechnical vocabulary ensuring standardized terminology across documents and regions.
- ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2: Provides rules for the structure and drafting of international standards, adopted by IEC technical committees.
Practical Value
Implementing IEC 61757-4-3:2020 enables organizations to:
- Ensure Consistent Quality: By applying standardized terminology and test methods, products can be reliably evaluated and compared.
- Accelerate Sensor Development: Clear guidance on design considerations and characteristic testing shortens development cycles and simplifies compliance.
- Enhance Application Suitability: Performance metrics tailored to user requirements and specific applications help optimize sensor solutions for diverse industries.
- Support International Trade: Following IEC guidelines facilitates market access and product acceptance on a global scale.
Organizations involved with power infrastructure, industrial monitoring, and sensor manufacturing benefit from adopting this comprehensive framework for fibre optic electric current sensing using the polarimetric method.
