IEC 61788-23:2024 addresses a test method for the determination of the residual resistance ratio (RRR), rRRR, of cavity-grade niobium. This method is intended for high-purity niobium grades with 150 < rRRR < 600. IEC 61788-23:2024 - Superconductivity: Residual resistance ratio measurement defines a standardized test method to determine the residual resistance ratio (RRR, rRRR) of cavity-grade niobium (Nb). The method is intended for high‑purity niobium with 150 < rRRR < 600 and covers specimen geometries with rectangular or round cross-sections, cross-sectional area > 1 mm² and < 20 mm², and a specimen length of 10 to 25 times the width or diameter.
The standard addresses the practical challenge that niobium becomes superconducting near 9 K, so the low‑temperature resistance is obtained by measuring the resistance just above the superconducting transition (≈10 K) while warming the specimen through the transition in the absence of an applied magnetic field. The RRR is then computed from the ratio of the room‑temperature resistance (293 K) to this residual resistance.
