IEC 61924-2:2012(E) specifies the minimum requirements for the design, manufacture, integration, methods of testing and required test results for an integrated navigation system (INS) to comply with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements of Resolution MSC.252(83). In addition, it takes account of IMO Resolution A.694(17) to which IEC 60945 is associated. When a requirement in this standard is different from IEC 60945, the requirement of this standard takes precedence. The contents of the corrigendum of November 2013 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61924-2:2012 - “Maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment and systems - Integrated navigation systems (INS) - Part 2: Modular structure for INS” defines minimum operational and performance requirements, methods of testing, and required test results for Integrated Navigation Systems. The standard is intended to ensure INS design, manufacture, integration and testing meet IMO requirements (Resolution MSC.252(83)). It also accounts for IMO Resolution A.694(17) and its association with IEC 60945; where differences exist, IEC 61924-2 takes precedence. The published copy includes the corrigendum of November 2013.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Modular architecture: Organizes INS requirements into modules (A–D) covering integration, task-related functions, alert management and documentation.
- Module A – Integration of navigational information: Interfaces and data exchange, data availability/validity/integrity, accuracy, plausibility, latency, consistent common reference system (CCRS), integrity monitoring and sensor/source selection.
- Module B – Task-related INS functions: Requirements for route planning, route monitoring, collision avoidance, navigation control data, alert handling, displays, human–machine interface (HMI), redundancies and fallback operation.
- Module C – Alert management: Logical architecture, priorities and categories of alerts (alarms, warnings, cautions), consistent presentation, central alert HMI, audible/visual annunciation, escalation, self-monitoring and interface requirements for alert communication.
- Module D – Documentation: Manuals, system configuration records, failure analysis and onboard familiarization material.
- Testing and certification: Test site requirements, methods of test, exceptions for previously performed tests, and required test results to demonstrate compliance.
Practical Applications
- Ensures interoperability and safe operation of shipboard Integrated Navigation Systems (INS) by standardizing how sensors, processors and displays share and present navigation data.
- Used to design and validate INS features such as collision avoidance, route monitoring, automatic control functions and centralized alert handling.
- Provides test procedures and pass/fail criteria for manufacturers, test labs and shipyards to verify system performance and compliance with IMO regulations.
Who Should Use This Standard
- Marine electronics manufacturers and system integrators designing INS
- Shipbuilders and naval architects for equipment selection and installation
- Flag state surveyors, classification societies and test laboratories conducting certification and compliance testing
- Ship operators and bridge system engineers responsible for procurement, commissioning and crew familiarization
Related Standards and Regulations
- IEC 60945 (marine equipment environmental and performance requirements) - where differences occur IEC 61924-2 prevails
- IMO Resolution MSC.252(83) (performance standards for INS)
- IMO Resolution A.694(17) (related navigational standards)
