IEC 61968-100:2022 defines how messages may be exchanged between cooperating systems in order to facilitate the transfer of application-specific data. Such application-specific data include but are not limited to the message payloads defined in IEC 61968 (Parts 3 to 9 and Part 13), IEC 61970 and IEC 62325. This IEC 61968-100:2022 edition cancels and replaces the IEC 61968-100:2013 edition published in 2013. This edition constitutes a technical revision. a) This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: IEC 61968-100:2022 has been refined to remove ambiguities and redundancies. Informative and normative clauses are marked as such and, in the latter case, appropriate verbal forms of language are used; b) The messages defined by IEC 61968-100:2022 are in general not backwards compatible with those of IEC 61968-100:2013. Annex I lists the significant technical changes introduced since the publication of IEC 61968-100:2013 and provides appropriate suggestions for migrating to IEC 61968-100:2022.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61968-100:2022 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that focuses on application integration at electric utilities. It specifically defines system interfaces for distribution management by detailing how messages may be exchanged between cooperating systems within electric utility infrastructures. The standard provides IEC implementation profiles designed to facilitate the transfer of application-specific data relevant to distribution management.
This 2022 edition replaces the 2013 version, incorporating a technical revision to refine details, remove ambiguities and redundancies, and clearly distinguish between normative and informative clauses. It addresses messaging structures aligned with IEC 61968 (Parts 3 to 9 and Part 13), IEC 61970, and IEC 62325, ensuring a standardized approach to integrating applications at utilities.
Key Topics
- Message Exchange Mechanisms: Defines methods for exchanging application-specific data messages in electrical distribution management systems.
- Message Formats and Profiles: Specifies message formats, archetypes, and profiles to ensure interoperability between systems.
- Types of Messages: Detailed description of request, response, event, and fault message archetypes that form the basis of communication.
- Message Headers and Payloads: Structures for headers and payloads that organize data and control information during system message exchanges.
- Message Exchange Patterns: Covers request/response, unsolicited event, consequential event, and acknowledgement patterns to support robust communication workflows.
- Encoding and Validation: References encoding mechanisms, schema definitions, and validation strategies to guarantee data integrity and consistency.
- Technical Enhancements: Updates to improve clarity, reduce duplication, and guide migration from earlier IEC 61968-100 versions.
Applications
IEC 61968-100:2022 is critical for organizations involved in electric utility distribution management who require seamless application integration and reliable data exchange between various operational systems. Its practical applications include:
- Distribution Management Systems (DMS) - Managing distribution network operations through integrated applications.
- System Interface Design - Developing standardized interfaces for communication between utility applications such as outage management, asset management, and customer information systems.
- Data Exchange Consistency - Assisting utilities to maintain consistent, accurate, and timely data sharing across multiple software platforms.
- Integration of Smart Grid Technologies - Facilitating interoperability as utilities modernize networks with smart meters, automated controls, and distributed energy resources (DER).
- Migration Planning - Guiding utilities transitioning from the 2013 version to adopt updated message profiles and reduce system incompatibilities.
By implementing IEC 61968-100:2022, electric utilities enhance operational efficiency, improve system reliability, and foster innovation through standardized communication frameworks.
Related Standards
To fully leverage IEC 61968-100:2022, familiarity with the following associated standards is beneficial:
- IEC 61968 (Parts 3 to 9 and Part 13) – Focus on specific message payloads and functional areas supporting distribution management interfaces.
- IEC 61970 – Pertains to energy management system application program interfaces (EMS-API) and complements IEC 61968 in system integration domains.
- IEC 62325 – Standardizes electricity market communications, which may intersect with distribution management data exchanges.
These interconnected standards collectively provide a comprehensive framework for achieving harmonized, interoperable electric utility applications, enabling sustainable and smarter grid operations.
