IEC 62005-9-1:2015 establishes a general reliability qualification program that applies to all passive fibre optic components except connectors and connector assemblies, the passing of which, suggests a minimum level of reliability assurance and allows that specific device to be called qualified to this standard. The objectives of this International Standard are as follows: - to specify the requirements for a general reliability qualification standard (RQS) for passive optical components; - to give direction to the supplier and to the end user on the production and purchase of passive optical components to meet and verify reliability qualification standards for certain specified service environments; - to give the minimum list of reliability qualification stress tests and conditions; - to establish guidance for the selection of appropriate measurements and pass/fail criteria; - to give relevant references; - and to establish the minimum reporting requirements. This standard defines a series of stress tests, their severity, sequences, quantities of devices under the test (DUT), acceptance criteria, and reporting requirements. It also gives guidelines to selecting appropriate measurements and pass/fail criteria. Keywords: reliability qualification standard (RQS) for passive optical components
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62005-9-1:2015 is an international standard from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that provides comprehensive guidelines for the reliability qualification of passive fibre optic components, excluding connectors and connector assemblies. This standard establishes a general Reliability Qualification Standard (RQS) that outlines the requirements, test methods, and reporting procedures manufacturers must follow to qualify their passive optical devices. Adhering to IEC 62005-9-1:2015 ensures a minimum level of reliability assurance and facilitates the procurement process for both suppliers and end users in the fibre optic industry.
Keywords: IEC 62005-9-1, passive optical components, reliability qualification, fibre optic devices, RQS, reliability standard, qualification tests
Key Topics
- General Reliability Qualification Standard (RQS): Specifies criteria for assessing the reliability of passive optical components under controlled and uncontrolled environments.
- Guidance for Stakeholders: Provides manufacturers and purchasers with directions for producing and verifying components that meet reliability standards appropriate to different service environments.
- Required Stress Tests: Details the minimum set of reliability qualification stress tests and test conditions tailored for passive optical components.
- Test Measurement Selection: Offers guidelines for selecting appropriate test measurements and pass/fail criteria, encouraging full compliance with relevant IEC performance standards or publicly available product data sheets.
- Service Environments: Defines qualification for controlled (Category C) and uncontrolled (Category U and Category O) environments, ensuring broad applicability across various operational scenarios.
- Documentation and Reporting: Establishes the minimum reporting requirements, emphasizing clarity and traceability in test results, justifications, and methodologies.
Applications
IEC 62005-9-1:2015 is integral to the qualification and reliability assurance of passive optical components used in various fibre optic systems, such as:
- Telecommunications networks: Ensures long-term performance of optical splitters, multiplexers, attenuators, and isolators used in central offices, data centers, and field installations.
- Industrial automation and sensing: Guarantees reliability of components deployed in demanding industrial environments, supporting robust data transmission and monitoring systems.
- Enterprise networking: Standardizes the reliability of passive optical devices in local area networks (LANs) and metropolitan area networks (MANs).
- Research and development: Provides a reference framework for the development and testing of new passive fibre optic components, ensuring they meet industry-recognized reliability standards before commercial release.
The RQS program includes a suite of stress tests covering mechanical shocks, vibration, temperature cycling, damp heat, low and high temperature storage, and, where applicable, electrostatic discharge (ESD) for sensitive components. By passing these tests, a component is considered "qualified" under this standard for the claimed environment.
Related Standards
IEC 62005-9-1:2015 is part of a broader family of standards and is often implemented in conjunction with:
- IEC 61300 series - Basic test and measurement procedures for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components.
- IEC 61753 series - Performance standards for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components.
- IEC 62005-1 - Reliability of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components: Introductory guide and definitions.
- IEC 60749-26 - Mechanical and climatic test methods for semiconductor devices, specifically ESD sensitivity for relevant optical components.
These standards together form a consistent framework for performance testing, measurement, and reliability validation in the fibre optics industry.
In summary, IEC 62005-9-1:2015 is an essential standard for organizations seeking to assure the reliability and quality of passive optical components. Its structured program of qualification tests, clear guidance for measurements and reporting, and compatibility with other IEC standards make it a cornerstone reference for supply chain reliability in fibre optic systems worldwide.
