Describes the procedure for the determination of the acidity of unused and used electrical mineral insulating oils. The method may be used to indicate relative changes that occur in a mineral insulating oil during use under oxidizing conditions regardless of the colour or other properties of the resulting mineral oil. The acidity can be used in the quality control of unused mineral oil. As a variety of oxidation products present in used mineral oil contribute to acidity and these products vary widely in their corrosion properties, the test cannot be used to predict corrosiveness of a mineral oil under service conditions. The acidity results obtained by this test method may or may not be numerically the same as those obtained by colorimetric methods, but they are generally of the same magnitude.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62021-1:2003 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the method for determining the acidity of electrical mineral insulating oils. This standard focuses on automatic potentiometric titration as the analytical technique for acidity measurement. Designed for both unused and used insulating liquids, the method provides a reliable indication of changes occurring in mineral insulating oils during usage-particularly under oxidizing conditions.
The acidity measurement is critical for quality control and monitoring oil degradation, contributing to effective maintenance of electrical equipment like transformers. While the test reflects relative changes in acidity, it does not predict corrosiveness caused by oxidation products. This makes IEC 62021-1 essential for routine quality assurance rather than advanced performance prediction.
Key Topics
- Scope & Application: Targets unused and used electrical mineral insulating oils regardless of color or other physical properties. Highlights that acidity results complement but may differ numerically from colorimetric methods.
- Principle of Method: Uses automated potentiometric titration, a precise electrochemical technique involving a glass electrode and reference electrode to determine acidity by measuring pH changes during titrant addition.
- Reagents and Solvents:
- Alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution as the titrant.
- Potassium hydrogen phthalate as a primary standard.
- Potassium chloride reference electrolyte and aqueous buffer solutions for electrode calibration.
- Apparatus:
- Potentiometric titration system including electrodes and automatic titrators.
- Stirrer and titration vessel for sample preparation.
- Sampling and Preparation: Clearly defined procedures for representative sampling and electrode maintenance to ensure accurate results.
- Calibration and Standardization: Instructions for titrant standardization and blank titrations to optimize measurement precision.
- Calculation & Reporting: Guidelines for data processing and documentation to maintain consistency and traceability in acidity determination.
- Precision: Details about repeatability and reproducibility to validate the method’s reliability.
Applications
IEC 62021-1:2003 is indispensable for industries and laboratories involved with electrical insulating liquids, particularly in:
- Quality Control of Mineral Insulating Oils: Ensures oils meet specified acidity limits before use.
- Maintenance and Monitoring: Tracks acidity changes due to oxidation or aging in transformers and other high-voltage equipment oils.
- Research and Development: Supports comparative studies of oil degradation and formulation improvements by monitoring acidity variations.
- Compliance and Standardization: Aligns testing procedures internationally, facilitating mutual recognition of test results.
This standard aids utility companies, electrical equipment manufacturers, testing laboratories, and oil producers by providing a reproducible method for assessing oil acidity, thereby improving electrical system reliability.
