IEC 62034:2012 specifies the basic performance and safety requirements for individual products and components that are incorporated into automatic test systems for use with emergency lighting systems on supply voltages not exceeding 1 000 V. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2006. It constitutes a technical revision. The main changes with respect to the first edition are the improvement of the understanding of the requirements in the various clauses and the compliance requirements listed below and the updating of the normative references. - 4.2 Monitoring of the timing circuit - 4.3 Functional requirements - 4.3.1 The automatic test system (ATS) - 4.4.2 Intercommunications failure - 4.4.4 Component failures - 4.4.7 Software failure - 5.1 Functional test - 5.2 Duration test - 6.2.2 Timing accuracy - 6.3.2.2 Testing alternate luminaires - 6.3.3.4 Limited duration test - 7.1 General.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62034:2012 – Automatic Test Systems for Battery Powered Emergency Escape Lighting – is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The standard specifies essential performance and safety requirements for products and components integrated into automatic test systems (ATS) for emergency lighting systems operating on supply voltages up to 1,000 V. This second edition updates and revises the original 2006 standard, offering clearer compliance criteria and referenced documents.
Automatic testing systems are critical for ensuring the reliable operational status of emergency lighting, which is vital for life safety and regulatory compliance in buildings. By defining key functional, construction, and safety prerequisites, IEC 62034:2012 helps manufacturers, facility managers, and system integrators deploy effective, automated emergency lighting maintenance strategies.
Key Topics
IEC 62034:2012 covers several important aspects of automatic testing for emergency lighting systems, including:
-
Performance and Functional Requirements:
- Specifies the operation of ATS, covering how functional and duration tests are to be performed and monitored.
- Ensures that faults in emergency luminaires or their associated power supplies are detected, reported, and acted upon.
-
System Integrity and Safety:
- Requirements are included for protection against failures in system components, wiring, and software.
- Defines procedures for handling intercommunications failures, component faults, and software errors in a way that preserves emergency lighting operation.
-
Testing Procedures:
- Outlines monthly functional testing and annual duration testing methods for verifying the proper function and endurance of emergency escape lighting.
- Stipulates accurate timing of tests and mandates indicators for any failures or postponed tests.
-
Compatibility and Electromagnetic Immunity:
- Describes the need for compatibility between ATS components and mandates electromagnetic compatibility in accordance with IEC 61547, ensuring reliability even in challenging environments.
-
Data Indication and Recording:
- Requirements for indicating and recording test results are included to facilitate compliance tracking and ongoing maintenance.
Applications
IEC 62034:2012 is applicable to a variety of emergency lighting installations, especially in environments where continuous safety compliance and operational reliability are critical. Practical applications include:
- Commercial and Public Buildings: Offices, shopping centers, airports, hospitals, and schools depend on automated test systems to ensure emergency lighting is always operational and compliant with legal requirements.
- Industrial Facilities: Automated test systems help maintain safety in factories and warehouses, where timely emergency egress is crucial during power failures.
- Building Management Systems (BMS): ATS can be integrated into BMS to automate testing, reporting, and maintenance scheduling for emergency lighting infrastructure.
- Retrofits and Upgrades: When upgrading or retrofitting lighting systems, applying IEC 62034:2012 helps align installations with the latest performance and safety expectations.
Adopting this automatic test system standard helps organizations achieve compliance, reduce manual testing errors and oversight, and enhance building occupant safety by ensuring emergency lights work when most needed.
