IEC 62040-2:2016 is a type test product standard for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and applies to movable, stationary, fixed or built-in, pluggable and permanently connected UPS for use in low-voltage distribution systems with an environment being either residential, commercial, light industrial or industrial, which deliver output voltage with port voltages not exceeding 1 500 V DC or 1 000 V AC and which include an energy storage device. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) the inclusion of network port limits in Table 1, Table 2 and Annex C for the sake of consistency with other standards; b) a change of quasi-peak limit for category C3 UPS in Table 2 for the sake of consistency with other standards; c) a clarification in Table 4 about the performance criteria for immunity tests; d) a revision of some test configurations in Annex A. The contents of the Interpretation sheet 1 of June 2018 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62040-2:2016 specifies electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for uninterruptible power systems (UPS). It is a type‑test product standard that applies to movable, stationary, fixed or built‑in, pluggable and permanently connected UPS used on low‑voltage distribution systems in residential, commercial, light‑industrial and industrial environments. The standard covers UPS that include energy storage and deliver port voltages up to 1 500 V DC or 1 000 V AC. This edition incorporates Interpretation Sheet 1 (2018) and several technical updates to network port limits, quasi‑peak limits for category C3, immunity performance criteria and test configurations.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & applicability: Defines which UPS types and environments are covered and clarifies network‑port applicability (network port limits apply only to ports that can connect to external circuits/networks).
- UPS categories: Classification into C1, C2, C3, C4 based on installation environment and emission/immunity expectations.
- Emissions:
- Conducted emission limits (mains terminals and network ports) in the 0.15 MHz to 30 MHz range (Tables 1–2).
- Radiated emission limits in the 30 MHz to 1 000 MHz range (Table 3).
- Measurement methods and test setups are defined in Annex A.
- Immunity:
- Performance criteria and minimum immunity levels (Table 4 and Tables 5–6).
- Tests include electrostatic discharge (ESD), radiated RF immunity, fast transients, surges, low‑frequency disturbances, magnetic fields, and immunity to voltage dips/short interruptions. Test methods are in Annex D.
- Network ports: Limits for signal/network ports are in Annex C, and the standard was updated to align network port limits with other standards.
- Test configurations & user testing: Annex A revises measurement set‑ups; Annex E offers guidance for site/user installation testing.
Practical applications and users
IEC 62040-2:2016 is used by:
- UPS manufacturers - to design products that meet EMC emission and immunity limits.
- Test laboratories and EMC engineers - to perform type testing and certify compliance using the prescribed measurement methods.
- Specifiers and purchasers - to define procurement requirements and evaluate vendor compliance.
- Installers and facility engineers - to interpret EMC behaviour and perform installation/site verification (Annex E).
- Regulatory and conformity assessment bodies - for product approval and market access.
Related standards
- IEC 62040‑2 complements other product safety, EMC and electrical standards applicable to UPS and power‑electronic equipment. Users should consider relevant general EMC standards and national regulatory requirements when applying IEC 62040‑2.
