IEC 62220-2-1:2023 describes the performance metrics associated with DUAL-ENERGY IMAGING capable DIGITAL X-RAY IMAGING DEVICES meant for medical applications and specifies the methods for their determination. These metrics can be used to analyse TISSUE-SUBTRACTED IMAGES and to evaluate dose performance, noise characteristics, and tissue-subtraction efficacy of DIGITAL X-RAY IMAGING DEVICES. The described methods indicate the procedures to obtain MULTI-SPECTRAL PRIMARY DATA and to compute their derived TISSUE-SUBTRACTED IMAGES. The intended users of this document are MANUFACTURERS and well-equipped test laboratories. This document is restricted to DIGITAL X-RAY IMAGING DEVICES that are used for single or multiple exposure dual-energy radiographic imaging based on, for example, CR systems, direct and indirect flat panel-detector based systems. This document excludes and is not applicable to: – DIGITAL X-RAY IMAGING DEVICES intended to be used in mammography or in dental RADIOGRAPHY; – slot scanning DIGITAL X-RAY IMAGING DEVICES; – COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY or CONE-BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY; – photon-energy discriminating devices such as photon counting X-RAY IMAGING DEVICES; – devices for dynamic imaging (where series of images are acquired, as in fluoroscopy or cardiac imaging). – DIGITAL X-RAY IMAGING DEVICES intended to be used with RADIOTHERAPY beams.
Abstract
IEC 62220-2-1:2023 Overview
IEC 62220-2-1:2023 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that focuses on medical electrical equipment, specifically digital X-ray imaging devices with dual-energy capability. This standard provides definitions, measurement methods, and performance metrics essential for evaluating dual-energy subtraction efficiency in detectors used for dual-energy radiographic imaging.
The standard primarily addresses digital X-ray systems used in medical diagnostics that leverage dual-energy imaging technology to produce tissue-subtracted images. This enables improved visualization and differentiation of tissues by analyzing multi-spectral primary data acquired through single or multiple exposures.
Key Characteristics:
- Focuses exclusively on dual-energy capable digital X-ray imaging detectors.
- Applicable to computed radiography (CR), direct and indirect flat-panel detectors.
- Excludes mammography, dental radiography, slot-scanning devices, photon counting detectors, dynamic imaging (fluoroscopy), cone-beam CT, and devices used with radiotherapy beams.
- Defines procedures for determining dose performance, noise characteristics, and the efficiency of tissue subtraction.
- Aimed at manufacturers and specialized test laboratories for device evaluation and optimization.
Key Topics Covered
Dual-Energy Subtraction Efficiency (DSE)
- The core metric defined by IEC 62220-2-1 is Dual-Energy Subtraction Efficiency, measuring a device’s ability to generate clinically useful tissue-subtracted images.
- DSE quantifies the contrast performance in tissue-subtracted images, supporting enhanced diagnostic accuracy.
- The standard presents formulas and test methods to calculate DSE, including corrections for raw data and the definition of regions of interest in images.
Measurement and Testing Conditions
- Specifies operating conditions, including geometry, irradiation settings, and radiation quality essential for reproducible testing.
- Details a test device setup for evaluating dual-energy contrast, ensuring consistent methodology across different testing facilities.
- Describes procedures to obtain multi-spectral primary data from dual-energy exposures.
- Establishes a framework for correcting raw acquisition data and deriving high-energy and low-energy images for subsequent analysis.
Device and Technology Scope
- Applies to digital X-ray systems capable of dual-energy imaging through single or multiple exposures.
- Focuses on devices with sensors compatible with dual-energy radiography such as flat-panel detectors and CR systems.
- Excludes technologies with fundamentally different detection mechanisms like photon-counting devices.
Practical Implications
- Supports manufacturers in performance benchmarking, enabling product optimization to enhance clinical output.
- Provides regulatory bodies with standard tools for evaluating dual-energy imaging devices during certification.
- Assists test laboratories in maintaining rigorous, consistent testing protocols worldwide.
