IEC 62264-6:2020 defines a technology independent model for a set of abstract services that is located above the application layer of the OSI model, and that is used for exchanging transaction messages based on the transaction models defined in IEC 62264-5. The model, which is called the Messaging Service Model (MSM), is intended for interoperability between manufacturing operations domain applications and applications in other domains.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62264-6:2020 - Enterprise-control system integration, Part 6: Messaging Service Model (MSM) - defines a technology‑independent, abstract service model for exchanging transaction messages above the OSI application layer. The MSM is designed to enable interoperability between manufacturing operations domain applications (e.g., MES) and applications in other domains by implementing standard channel, publication and request/response services based on the transaction models of IEC 62264-5.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard specifies the MSM architecture and service semantics rather than concrete wire protocols. Important technical topics include:
- Abstract service model and positioning above the OSI application layer for application-to-application communication
- Channel types and management: creation, deletion, retrieval and listing of channels; channel naming, hierarchy and scope
- Publication (publish-subscribe) services: provider publication services (open/post/expire/close) and consumer subscription services (open/read/remove/close)
- Request channel services: request/response session handling for GET/SHOW and CHANGE/RESPONSE patterns
- Notify listener service for optional asynchronous notifications to consumers
- Topics and information scope to route and filter messages within channels
- Sessions and lifecycle: rules for open/close sessions, publication expiration and message removal
- Security: secure message exchanges, security tokens on channels, token formats and provider implementation considerations
- Service definitions and conformance: type definitions, return values, service faults and conformance criteria
- Implementation guidance: Annex A covers service provider considerations, security, logging, transformation and cross‑company bridging; Annex B addresses Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) interfaces
Applications and users
IEC 62264-6 is intended for:
- MES vendors and automation software developers implementing standard interfaces between control systems and enterprise applications
- System integrators and IT/OT architects designing interoperable messaging layers across plants or companies
- Manufacturing operations engineers seeking consistent publish/subscribe and request/response patterns for transactions defined in IEC 62264-5
- Companies building cross‑company bridges or ESB integrations where a technology‑independent messaging model improves portability and governance
Practical uses include standardized MES-to-ERP exchanges, event distribution (alarms, production updates), change/response workflows, and enterprise-scale message routing with defined security and lifecycle rules.
