IEC 62386-207:2018 specifies a bus system for control by digital signals of electronic ligthing equipment which is in line with the requirements of IEC 61347 (all parts), with the addition of DC supplies. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2009. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: fast fade time has been redefined; short circuit and open circuit have been deleted; physical selection has been deleted; dimming curve selection has been moved to a separate part; load increase, load decrease and reference measurement have been moved to a separate part; thermal gear and lamp protection have been moved to separate parts; LED module integrated has been moved to a separate part; link to IEC 62386-102 error bits has been clarified; the following commands have been deleted: ENABLE CURRENT PROTECTOR DISABLE CURRENT PROTECTOR QUERY POSSIBLE OPERATING MODES QUERY SHORT CIRCUIT QUERY OPEN CIRCUIT QUERY CURRENT PROTECTOR ACTIVE QUERY CURRENT PROTECTOR ENABLED QUERY OPERATING MODE
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62386-207:2018 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the digital addressable lighting interface (DALI) requirements for LED modules (device type 6). This standard defines a bus system enabling digital control of electronic lighting equipment compliant with IEC 61347, including support for DC power supplies. It replaces the first edition published in 2009 and includes significant technical revisions to enhance performance and interoperability of LED control gear.
The emphasis of IEC 62386-207:2018 is on ensuring reliable, efficient, and standardized communication protocols and control mechanisms for LED modules within smart lighting systems. It eliminates older commands and features for simplification, focuses on refined operational aspects like fast fade times, and separates certain functionalities into distinct parts of the IEC 62386 series.
Key Topics
- Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI): Establishes a common communication bus standard optimized for digital control of LED modules within lighting systems, supporting compatibility across manufacturers.
- Control Gear Requirements for LED Modules: Defines specific technical criteria tailored for LED modules (device type 6), including electrical specifications, transmission protocol structure, and timing considerations.
- Fast Fade Time Redefinition: Adjusts the speed at which LED brightness changes to enhance user experience and system responsiveness.
- Removal of Obsolete Commands: Commands related to current protection, operating modes, and circuit queries have been deleted to streamline standard implementation.
- Thermal Protection and Load Management: References to thermal gear protection and load control features are migrated to separate parts within IEC 62386 series for modular implementation.
- Interface Power Supply and Protocol Structure: Details the power supply requirements and message framing needed for effective LED module control.
- Error Handling and Status Reporting: Clarifies links to IEC 62386-102 error bits, improving fault diagnosis and system robustness.
- Compliance with IEC 61347: Ensures lighting control gear conforms with related safety and performance standards.
- Modular Standardization: Encourages a cohesive ecosystem by moving dimming curve selection, load control, and integrated LED module features to dedicated parts, supporting flexible system design.
Applications
IEC 62386-207:2018 is instrumental for manufacturers, designers, and integrators of LED lighting systems aiming to implement:
- Smart Lighting Control Systems: Enabling individually addressable LED modules for adaptive lighting in commercial, industrial, and residential environments.
- Energy-Efficient Lighting Solutions: Facilitating advanced dimming and power management that comply with energy-saving regulations and user comfort demands.
- Building Automation: Integrating LED lighting control into broader building management systems via standardized digital protocols.
- Retrofit and Upgrade Projects: Supporting backward compatibility and smooth transitions from legacy lighting control to modern DALI-based systems.
- OEM LED Module Development: Providing precise requirements for control gear to ensure compatibility and interoperability across LED products and control systems.
- Thermal and Fault Management: Allowing advanced monitoring of LED module status to prevent failures and extend product life.
Related Standards
IEC 62386-207:2018 is part of the broader IEC 62386 series, which collectively governs Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) standards. Key related parts include:
- IEC 62386-101: General requirements for system components, providing foundational specifications for DALI devices.
- IEC 62386-102: General requirements for control gear, including error bit definitions referenced in Part 207.
- IEC 62386-218: Governs dimming curve implementation, now associated with but separate from Part 207.
- Other Parts in the 2xx Series: Cover specific extensions related to various lamp types, load control, and thermal management that interface with Part 207.
- IEC 61347 Series: Specifies performance and safety requirements for lamp control gear, which Part 207 supplements for LED modules.
- IEC 62386-103: Addresses general requirements for control devices, complementing control gear specifications.
This modular structure supports flexible and scalable lighting control systems that adhere to international best practices and interoperability standards.
By adhering to IEC 62386-207:2018, stakeholders in the lighting industry ensure standardized, efficient, and scalable operation of LED modules within digital lighting control networks, enhancing both performance and user experience in modern illumination solutions.
