IEC 62541-14:2020 defines the OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) PubSub communication model. It defines an OPC UA publish subscribe pattern which complements the client server pattern defined by the Services in IEC 62541-4. IEC TR 62541-1 gives an overview of the two models and their distinct uses. PubSub allows the distribution of data and events from an OPC UA information source to interested observers inside a device network as well as in IT and analytics cloud systems. This document consists of • a general introduction of the PubSub concepts, • a definition of the PubSub configuration parameters, • mapping of PubSub concepts and configuration parameters to messages and transport protocols, and • a PubSub configuration model. Not all OPC UA Applications will need to implement all defined message and transport protocol mappings. IEC 62541-7 defines the Profile that dictates which mappings need to be implemented in order to be compliant with a particular Profile.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62541-14:2020, titled OPC Unified Architecture - Part 14: PubSub, is an international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This standard defines the OPC UA Publish-Subscribe (PubSub) communication model, which complements the traditional OPC UA client-server pattern described in IEC 62541-4. The PubSub model enables efficient distribution of data and events from OPC UA information sources to multiple observers across device networks, as well as IT and cloud analytics systems.
The document provides a comprehensive framework for implementing PubSub in industrial automation and related fields, outlining key concepts, configuration parameters, message mapping, and transport protocols. It supports scalable, decoupled communication architectures critical for real-time data exchange across the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industry 4.0 ecosystems.
Key Topics
-
PubSub Concepts
Introduction to the fundamental elements such as DataSets, Messages, Publishers, Subscribers, and the security model. The standard elaborates how these entities interact for efficient and secure data exchange. -
PubSub Configuration Parameters
Detailed description of configuration settings governing PublisherGroups, SubscriberGroups, DatasetWriters, DatasetReaders, and network message parameters. These parameters enable tailored deployment of PubSub solutions optimized for various applications. -
Message Mappings
Defines how OPC UA data is structured in messages, supporting multiple encodings including the UA Datagram Protocol (UADP) and JSON. This facilitates interoperability between different systems and networks. -
Transport Protocols
Specifies transport protocol mappings encompassing UDP, Ethernet, and message brokers like AMQP and MQTT. This flexibility allows integration with existing communication infrastructures including local networks and cloud services. -
Security and Key Services
Addresses secure distribution of messages through mechanisms like SecurityGroups and key management services, ensuring confidentiality and integrity critical for industrial environments. -
Configuration Model
Provides an object-oriented configuration model for representing the PubSub setup, status, and diagnostics within OPC UA servers, enhancing manageability and diagnostics.
Applications
IEC 62541-14:2020’s PubSub model is ideal for modern industrial automation and digital transformation initiatives. Key application areas include:
-
Industrial Automation Networks
Real-time sensor data distribution across controllers, HMIs, and SCADA systems with low latency and high reliability. -
IIoT and Industry 4.0
Enabling efficient edge-to-cloud data flow, the PubSub model supports data analytics, condition monitoring, and predictive maintenance by delivering data to cloud-based AI and analytics platforms. -
Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
Simplifies integration of distributed devices by decoupling data producers and consumers, reducing network chatter. -
Smart Manufacturing
Enhances interoperability and scalability in smart factories leveraging OPC UA as a standardized communication backbone. -
Energy and Utility Management
Distributes telemetry and events efficiently across substations and control centers.
Related Standards
IEC 62541-14:2020 builds on and complements other OPC UA standards and international guidelines:
- IEC 62541-4 - Defines OPC UA Client-Server services that PubSub complements with a publish-subscribe communication paradigm.
- IEC TR 62541-1 - Provides an overview and comparison of OPC UA Client-Server and PubSub models, explaining their distinct and synergistic uses.
- IEC 62541-7 - Specifies OPC UA Profiles, including which PubSub message and transport mappings are mandatory for specific compliance levels.
- AMQP and MQTT Protocols - Recognized transport protocols within IEC 62541-14 for broker-based messaging supporting cloud and IT system integration.
- Security Key Management Standards - Relevant for implementing the security services defined in the PubSub model.
IEC 62541-14:2020 is a pivotal standard facilitating scalable, modular, and secure data exchange in industrial and enterprise environments. Its support for multiple transport protocols and message formats makes it a versatile solution ready for today's connected systems and tomorrow’s evolving technologies. Organizations implementing OPC UA PubSub benefit from standardized interoperability, improved network efficiency, and enhanced data availability across complex digital ecosystems.
