IEC 62618:2022 applies to Spectroscopy-based alarming Personal Radiation Detectors (SPRD). SPRDs detect and identify gamma radiation and may detect neutron radiation. SPRDs can be worn on a belt or in a pocket to alert the wearer of the presence of a radiation source. SPRDs provide search, similar to that of a Personal Radiation Device (PRD), and identification capability to identify radiation sources. They can discriminate between alarms caused by Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) or medical radionuclides and alarms from industrial sources or Special Nuclear Material (SNM). This document establishes performance requirements and specifies general characteristics, general test conditions, radiological, climatic, mechanical, and electromagnetic characteristics. This document also provides test methods that are used to determine if an SPRD meets the stated requirements. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2013. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a. making the standard consistent with the new standards for detection of illicit trafficking of radioactive material (see the Introduction); b. creating unformed functionality test for all environmental, electromagnetic and mechanical tests and a requirement for the coefficient of variation of each nominal mean reading; c. reference to IEC 62706 for the environmental, electromagnetic and mechanical test conditions; d. adding information regarding climatic exposures.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62618:2022 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines requirements for Spectroscopy-based Alarming Personal Radiation Detectors (SPRD). SPRDs are specialized radiation protection instruments designed predominantly for the detection and identification of gamma radiation, and optionally neutron radiation. These devices are portable and can be conveniently worn on a belt or carried in a pocket, providing real-time alerts to the wearer about the presence of radioactive material.
This standard specifically targets applications related to the detection of illicit trafficking of radioactive material-a critical component in global radiation protection and security efforts. IEC 62618:2022 establishes performance criteria, test methods, and general characteristics covering radiological, climatic, mechanical, and electromagnetic properties of SPRDs to ensure reliability in field operations.
The 2022 edition supersedes the first edition from 2013, incorporating updated functional testing protocols and referencing new related standards such as IEC 62706 for environmental, electromagnetic, and mechanical conditions, alongside extended climatic exposure requirements.
Key Topics
-
Detection Capabilities:
SPRDs must effectively detect and discriminate gamma radiation sources, including industrial radioactive materials and Special Nuclear Material (SNM), while minimizing false alarms from Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) and medical radionuclides. -
Performance and Testing:
The standard details rigorous test procedures including environmental, electromagnetic, and mechanical stresses to validate operational stability. It outlines parameters such as false alarm rates, gamma and neutron detection response, and radionuclide identification accuracy. -
Environmental and Mechanical Requirements:
Devices are tested under varying climatic conditions (temperature, humidity, dust, moisture), vibration, shock, and drop scenarios to assure durability and functionality in diverse field settings. -
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC):
SPRDs must meet strict EMC conditions to minimize interference from radiofrequency emissions, electrostatic discharge, and magnetic fields, ensuring consistent alarm performance. -
Alarm Functionality:
The standard sets clear criteria for alarm notifications including types of alarms, alarm thresholds, and user interface considerations to promote user safety and rapid response. -
Documentation and Compliance:
Manufacturers must provide comprehensive operational manuals, test certificates, and declarations of conformity to facilitate regulatory acceptance and maintain quality assurance.
Applications
IEC 62618:2022 is essential for organizations involved in:
-
Radiation Security and Border Control:
Deploying SPRDs in ports, airports, and border crossings to identify illicit trafficking and unauthorized movement of radioactive sources. -
Law Enforcement and Customs:
Enabling field personnel to detect and respond swiftly to potential radiation threats during inspections and routine searches. -
Emergency Response Teams:
Supporting radiological emergency preparedness by equipping responders with reliable hands-on detection tools. -
Industry and Regulatory Bodies:
Assisting regulatory inspections and compliance checks where personal radiation monitoring helps prevent accidents involving orphan sources or contaminated scrap metals.
Related Standards
-
IEC 62706:
Defines environmental, electromagnetic, and mechanical test conditions referenced by IEC 62618 to ensure device robustness. -
IEC 61972:
Covers performance tests for personal radiation detectors generally, which complement IEC 62618’s focus on spectroscopy-based devices. -
ISO/IEC Directives:
Framework guidelines for standard development referenced throughout IEC documents, ensuring consistency and international applicability. -
Other Radiation Detection Standards:
Including those for personal radiation devices (PRDs), neutron detectors, and portal monitors, which together form a comprehensive suite for radiation protection instrumentation.
IEC 62618:2022 stands as a critical international standard advancing the capabilities and reliability of SPRDs in safeguarding against illicit radioactive material trafficking. Its detailed performance criteria and test methods provide manufacturers and users with clear guidelines to ensure device efficacy in challenging operational environments, thereby enhancing global nuclear security measures and radiation protection practices.
