IEC 62680-1-8:2019 is to describe in detail all the Terminal Types that are supported by the Audio Device Class. This document is considered an integral part of the Audio Device Class Specification, although subsequent revisions of this document are independent of the revision evolution of the main Audio Device Class Specification. This is to easily accommodate the addition of new Terminal Types without impeding the core Audio Device Class Specification. The Audio Device Class Definition applies to all devices or functions embedded in composite devices. All audio signals inside an audio function start at an Input Terminal, pass through some Units, and leave the function through an Output Terminal. Units can manipulate the signal in various ways. Terminals represent the connections of the function to the outside world. As part of the Terminal descriptor, the wTerminalType field specifies the vendor’s suggested use of the Terminal. For example, a pair of speakers is a more suitable target for music output than a telephone line. This feature allows a vendor to ensure that applications use the device in a consistent and meaningful way.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62680-1-8:2019 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in collaboration with the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF). This standard provides a comprehensive definition of terminal types for USB Audio 3.0 device classes, specifying the common components used in universal serial bus interfaces for data and power. It specifically addresses all terminal types supported by the USB Audio Device Class, enabling consistent and meaningful interaction between audio devices and host applications.
The standard forms an essential part of the Audio Device Class Specification but is maintained independently to allow the seamless addition of new terminal types without disrupting the core audio class specifications. It categorizes audio terminals as input, output, bi-directional, telephony, external, and embedded function types, describing their capabilities and intended vendor-specific usages.
Key Topics
-
Terminal Type Definitions: IEC 62680-1-8:2019 details the classification of terminal types in USB Audio 3.0 devices, including:
- Input terminals: Where audio signals enter the device.
- Output terminals: Where audio signals exit the device.
- Bi-directional terminals: Supporting both input and output signals.
- Telephony terminals: Specialized types for telephony applications.
- External terminals: Interfaces connecting to external audio components.
- Embedded function terminals: Internal processing units within the device.
-
wTerminalType Field: Each terminal descriptor contains the
wTerminalTypeattribute indicating the vendor’s recommended usage scenario, supporting tailored application behavior and ensuring consistent device functionality across different software environments. -
Flexibility for Updates: The standard’s structure allows for future extensions by enabling new terminal types to be added independently, facilitating evolving audio technologies and use cases without impacting existing device implementations.
-
Scope and Integration: Applies to all audio functions within a composite USB device, covering signal flow through terminals and intermediary processing units to enable comprehensive audio interface descriptions.
