Overview
IEC 62769-7:2023 - Field Device Integration (FDI) Part 7: Communication Devices - defines the FDI elements that implement communication capabilities (called Communication Devices) within the FDI architecture. Edition 3.0 (2023) focuses on the Communication Device aspects of FDI Packages and treats the FDI Communication Server as a primary example of a Communication Device. The standard covers information models, EDD/EDD‑related rules, OPC UA mappings, communication packages, and runtime behaviour for servers and gateways.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and architecture: Limits the FDI Package content to Communication Devices and illustrates their place in the overall FDI architecture.
- FDI Communication Package: Rules for EDD (Electronic Device Description) content specific to communication devices, including device, CommunicationDevice, CommunicationServiceProvider, ConnectionPoint and Network components.
- Information Model: Definition of the FDI Communication Server and Gateway information models (AddressSpace, types such as CommunicationServerType, ServerCommunicationDeviceType and ServerCommunicationServiceType).
- OPC UA mapping and profile: Mapping of the FDI Server Information Model to OPC UA AddressSpace and defined OPC UA Server profile for FDI Communication Server interoperability.
- Methods and runtime operations: Standardized actions and methods such as Initialize, Reset, Scan, SetAddress, ValidateNetwork and ValidateModules, plus lifecycle behaviour (startup, deployment, parameterization, connect/disconnect, abort handling).
- Communication relations and state machines: Defined relation lifecycle (connect, disconnect, abort) and server/gateway state machine behaviour for consistent operation.
- Communication Gateway: Separate information model and handling for gateways supporting nested and multi-channel topologies.
- Annexes: Layered protocol guidance and namespace/mapping normative annexes for protocol-specific extensions.
Practical applications
- Integrating fieldbus, HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus or other networked field devices into host systems using FDI communication servers and gateways.
- Packaging device descriptions for communication modules so systems (DCS, PLC, asset management, engineering tools) can discover, configure and maintain devices consistently.
- Implementing OPC UA-enabled communication servers/gateways that expose FDI Information Models and enable IIoT and industrial automation interoperability.
- Standardizing device vendor deliverables (EDDs and communication packages) to simplify system integration and reduce engineering effort.
Who should use this standard
- Device and communication server/gateway vendors creating FDI Packages and EDDs
- System integrators, automation engineers and asset management tool developers
- OPC UA developers implementing FDI Information Model mappings
- Control system and IIoT platform architects requiring consistent device communication handling
