IEC 62832-1:2020 defines the general principles of the Digital Factory framework (DF framework), which is a set of model elements (DF reference model) and rules for modelling production systems. This DF framework defines: • a model of production system assets; • a model of relationships between different production system assets; • the flow of information about production system assets. The DF framework does not cover representation of building construction, input resources (such as raw production material, assembly parts), consumables, work pieces in process, nor end products. It applies to the three types of production processes (continuous control, batch control, and discrete control) in any industrial sector (for example aeronautic industries, automotive, chemicals, wood).
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62832-1:2020, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), establishes the general principles of the Digital Factory (DF) framework for industrial-process measurement, control, and automation. This standard provides a foundational model and guidelines to represent production system assets, their interrelationships, and the flow of information within production environments. Its scope covers continuous, batch, and discrete control production types across various industrial sectors such as aerospace, automotive, chemical, and wood industries.
The DF framework supports the digital transformation of manufacturing processes by defining model elements and rules for production system modeling. It focuses specifically on production system assets and excludes elements such as building construction, input raw materials, work-in-process items, and finished products. The standard encourages consistency and interoperability in the digital representation of factory assets to enhance efficiency, flexibility, and lifecycle management.
Key Topics
-
Digital Factory Reference Model: The core of IEC 62832-1 is a structured model comprising asset classes, assets, data elements, and relationships between these elements to represent production systems.
-
Concept Dictionary and Identification: The standard introduces a concept dictionary that provides formal definitions, unique identifiers, and data element types to unify terminology and facilitate clear communication within digital factory frameworks.
-
Modeling Production Assets and Relationships: It provides detailed guidance on modeling tangible and intangible assets and defining relationships such as asset links, associations, and assignments between assets to depict complex production systems accurately.
-
Rules for Integration and Reuse: IEC 62832-1 sets out rules that ensure modularity and reuse of digital factory components, making it easier to integrate new assets into existing factories and leverage common libraries.
-
Applicability to Multiple Production Types: The standard's principles cover continuous, batch, and discrete control processes, making it versatile for diverse manufacturing sectors.
-
Exclusions: Notably, it does not cover non-production system elements like buildings or raw materials, focusing strictly on the measurement, control, and automation models of manufacturing assets.
Applications
-
Digital Twin and Factory Simulation: By providing a standardized reference model, IEC 62832-1 facilitates the creation of digital twins that mirror physical production assets and their configurations, enabling simulation and optimization.
-
Production System Lifecycle Management: The framework supports the management of production system assets across their entire lifecycle for improved maintenance, upgrades, and planning.
-
Interoperability in Industrial Automation: Manufacturers and system integrators use this standard to ensure compatible data exchange and seamless integration of automation components and control systems.
-
Industry 4.0 Implementations: The standard underpins Industry 4.0 initiatives by standardizing the digital representation of factory components, contributing to smart factory development.
-
Cross-Industry Use: Applicable to sectors such as aerospace, automotive, chemical, and woodworking, enhancing universal applicability for digital factory development models.
