IEC 62841-2-2:2014 deals with the safety of electric motor-operated or magnetically driven hand-held screwdrivers and impact wrenches. The rated voltage is not more than 250 V for single-phase a.c. or d.c. tools, and 480 V for three-phase a.c. tools. The rated input is not more than 3 700 W. The limits for the applicability of this standard for battery tools is given in Annex K. This standard deals with the hazards presented by tools which are encountered by all persons in the normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse of the tools. Hand-held electric tools, which can be mounted on a support or working stand for use as fixed tools without any alteration of the tool itself, are within the scope of this standard and such combination of a hand-held tool and a support is considered to be a transportable tool and thus covered by the relevant Part 3. The attention of National Committees is drawn to the fact that equipment manufacturers and testing organizations may need a transitional period following publication of a new, amended or revised IEC publication in which to make products in accordance with the new requirements and to equip themselves for conducting new or revised tests. It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 36 months from the date of publication. Key words: Hand-held, Screwdriver, Impact wrench This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 62841-1:2014. The contents of the corrigendum of October 2015 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62841-2-2:2014 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that sets forth safety requirements specific to electric motor-operated hand-held screwdrivers and impact wrenches. It is a part of the broader IEC 62841 series, which covers safety standards for hand-held tools, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery. This particular part-Part 2-2-supplements the general safety provisions described in IEC 62841-1 by addressing particular hazards and operational characteristics unique to screwdrivers and impact wrenches, helping manufacturers and users ensure safer tool design and usage.
The scope of IEC 62841-2-2 includes electric tools with rated voltages up to 250 V (single-phase a.c. or d.c.) and up to 480 V for three-phase a.c. tools, with an input power not exceeding 3,700 W. Battery-operated tools and their specific safety requirements are addressed in Annex K, ensuring comprehensive coverage for portable cordless models as well.
Key Topics
-
Tool Classification and Definitions: The standard distinguishes between hand-held screwdrivers (tools without impact mechanisms but possibly with depth or torque settings) and impact wrenches (tools equipped with rotary impact mechanisms), outlining safety considerations unique to each.
-
General and Specific Safety Requirements: This includes protection against electrical hazards, mechanical risks, overheating, moisture, and fire resistance. The standard covers areas such as starting mechanisms, current and input limits, internal wiring, and mechanical strength.
-
Operational Hazards: Guidelines address hazards arising from normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse, including mechanical stresses, risks of access to live electrical parts, and overloading protection.
-
Marking and User Instructions: Clear requirements for labeling and documentation help improve safe operation, user awareness, and compliance with safety regulations.
-
Testing Conditions and Endurance: Standardized test methods for vibration, noise emission, mechanical stresses, overheating, and durability ensure tools are robust, safe, and comfortable for prolonged use.
-
Battery Tool Specifications: Annex K specifies the limits and conditions concerning battery-powered tools and battery packs, reflecting the increasing prevalence of cordless screwdrivers and impact wrenches.
Applications
IEC 62841-2-2 addresses essential safety aspects that impact multiple stakeholders in the manufacturing, certification, and end-use of hand-held screwdrivers and impact wrenches:
-
Manufacturers: Provides clear requirements to design and develop safer, more reliable electric screwdrivers and impact wrenches that meet international benchmarks.
-
Testing and Certification Labs: Defines test procedures and performance criteria necessary for conformity assessment, helping ensure product compliance with safety regulations.
-
End Users and Employers: Enhances worker safety by minimizing risks during tool operation in industrial, construction, automotive, and maintenance settings.
-
Regulatory Bodies: Assists in the adoption and enforcement of harmonized safety standards internationally, facilitating global trade and market access.
Tools covered under IEC 62841-2-2 are widely used in sectors such as electronics assembly, automotive repair, construction, and general maintenance, where precision fastening and torque control are critical.

-
Battery Safety Standards: For battery packs used in cordless tools, references to applicable battery safety regulations and standards complement Annex K of IEC 62841-2-2.
-
National and Regional Implementations: Many countries adopt IEC 62841-2-2 with or without national adaptations, frequently after a recommended transitional period of up to 36 months for industry adjustment.
