IEC 62841-3-11:2024 applies to transportable combined mitre and bench saws intended to be used with a toothed saw blade for cutting wood and analogous materials, plastics and nonferrous metals except magnesium with a saw blade diameter not exceeding 315 mm, which hereinafter is simply referred to as saw or tool. This document does not apply to: - saws intended to cut other metals, such as magnesium, steel and iron, or food; - saws with an automatic feeding device; - saws designed for use with abrasive wheels; - saws designed for use with dado blades; - single function bench or table saws; - single function mitre saws; - combined mitre and bench saws other than transportable. NOTE 101 Transportable saws intended to cut ferrous metals will be covered by a future part of IEC 62841-3. NOTE 102 Transportable tools designed for use with abrasive wheels are covered by IEC 62841-3-10:2015. NOTE 103 Transportable table saws are covered by IEC 62841-3-1:2014. NOTE 104 Transportable mitre saws are covered by IEC 62841-3-9:2020. NOTE 105 In Europe (EN IEC 62841-3-11), the following additional NOTE applies: NOTE Z101 Combined mitre and bench saws other than transportable are covered by EN 1870-3:2014. This document is to be used in conjunction with IEC 62841-1:2014. This document supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses in IEC 62841-1, so as to convert it into the IEC Standard: Particular requirements for transportable combined mitre and bench saws.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62841-3-11:2024 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies safety requirements for transportable combined mitre and bench saws. These electric motor-operated tools are designed for cutting wood, plastics, and nonferrous metals (except magnesium) using a toothed saw blade with a maximum diameter of 315 mm. This standard ensures heightened operational safety, supporting manufacturers, regulators, and users in maintaining high safety standards for transportable saws used in workshops, on construction sites, and by professional tradespeople.
IEC 62841-3-11:2024 is a targeted companion to IEC 62841-1:2014, supplementing general safety requirements with particular attention to the design and operation of combined mitre and bench saws to prevent injury, avoid electrical hazards, and promote long-term equipment reliability.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability:
- Applies to electric or magnetically-driven combined mitre and bench saws, intended for cutting wood, plastics, and nonferrous metals (excluding magnesium), with saw blade diameters not exceeding 315 mm.
- Excludes saws used for cutting ferrous metals or food, saws with automatic feeding, those using abrasive or dado blades, and machines not designed to be transportable.
-
Hazard Prevention:
- Covers protection against electrical risks, mechanical hazards, and improper access to live parts.
- Details requirements for guarding, safe starting mechanisms, and overload protection.
- Addresses risks from abnormal operation, heating, moisture, fire, and rust.
-
Construction and Marking:
- Specifies design elements, robust construction, clear safety markings, and sufficient instructions for the safe operation and maintenance of the saws.
- Ensures appropriate measures for earthing and reliable wiring.
-
Testing and Performance:
- Provides guidelines for mechanical strength tests, endurance, insulation, leakage current measurement, and noise/vibration emissions.
- Inclusion of requirements for battery-powered versions and tools with direct mains connection.
-
Exclusions and References:
- Distinguishes from similar standards addressing abrasive wheel saws, single-function saws, and non-transportable models.
Applications
IEC 62841-3-11:2024 is relevant across a broad range of industries where safety in power tool use is critical:
-
Manufacturers:
- Supports design, testing, and certification of compliant transportable combined mitre and bench saws for international and regional markets.
- Provides a framework for the integration of mechanical guards, electrical insulation, and safety interlocks.
-
Testing Laboratories and Certification Bodies:
- Supplies a reliable basis for safety conformity assessment, ensuring products meet international requirements before entering the market.
-
Trade and Construction Professionals:
- Enhances workplace safety by promoting tools that minimize risks of electrical shock, cuts, or accidental operation.
- Provides end-users with confidence in the safe and effective use of advanced combined saws.
-
Regulatory and Procurement:
- Facilitates clear guidelines for authorities and organizations responsible for workplace safety and tool procurement, aligning operational practices with international standards.
