IEC 62841-4-7:2022 clause 1 of IEC 62841-1:2014, is applicable, except as follows: Addition: This document applies to pedestrian controlled walk-behind lawn scarifiers and lawn aerators which are designed for regenerating lawns by combing out materials such as grass, thatch and moss or cutting vertically into the lawn face using metallic tines; and/or rigid non-metallic tines which rotate about a horizontal axis. This document does not apply to pedestrian controlled walk-behind lawnmowers; towed/semi-mounted lawn scarifiers and lawn aerators; ride-on machines; non-powered lawn scarifiers and lawn aerators; combustion engine powered lawn scarifiers and lawn aerators; plug aerators (corers); hybrid and fuel cell powered machines and associated charging systems; and garden tractors or their attachments. Abstract
Overview
IEC 62841-4-7:2022 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), focusing on safety requirements for pedestrian controlled walk-behind lawn scarifiers and aerators. As part 4-7 of the broader IEC 62841 series, which covers electric motor-operated hand-held and transportable tools as well as lawn and garden machinery, this standard specifies particular safety provisions tailored to walk-behind machines designed for lawn regeneration. It addresses machines equipped with rotating metallic or rigid non-metallic tines operating about a horizontal axis, primarily used to remove thatch, moss, and aerate lawns safely and efficiently.
This standard excludes pedestrian-controlled walk-behind lawnmowers, ride-on machines, towed or semi-mounted devices, combustion engine-powered scarifiers and aerators, non-powered devices, plug aerators (corers), and hybrid or fuel cell-powered machinery.
Key Topics
-
Safety Specifications
IEC 62841-4-7 provides detailed technical safety requirements aimed at minimizing operational hazards associated with walk-behind lawn scarifiers and aerators. This includes protection against mechanical hazards arising from rotating tines, live electrical parts, and ejection of material during operation. -
Mechanical Protection
The standard specifies construction and guarding requirements, such as handle design to ensure operator control zones, safety distances to prevent accidental contact with moving parts, and guarding of tines to reduce risk from thrown objects. -
Electrical Safety
It addresses critical electrical safety considerations including insulation, protection against access to live components, overload protection, resistance to moisture, heat, rusting, and the proper design of internal wiring and external cords. -
Performance and Endurance Testing
The norm requires rigorous testing protocols for endurance, abnormal operation, and mechanical strength, ensuring that walk-behind scarifiers and aerators maintain safety and functionality over their service life. -
Marking and Instructions
Clear labeling and comprehensive user instructions are mandated, including safety warnings such as "Beware of thrown objects" and guidelines for maintenance procedures to promote safe use. -
Noise and Vibration Emissions
Annex I provides methods for measuring noise and vibration, important factors affecting occupational health and compliance with environmental regulations. -
Battery and Power Systems
Normative annexes K and L cover requirements for battery-powered tools and battery packs, including those connected to mains or non-isolated sources, reflecting the shift towards cordless electric lawn equipment.
Applications
IEC 62841-4-7:2022 serves as a critical reference for manufacturers, designers, safety inspectors, and certification bodies involved in the development and evaluation of pedestrian controlled walk-behind lawn scarifiers and aerators. Its practical applications include:
-
Product Design and Development
Ensuring machinery meets internationally recognized safety criteria, mitigating hazards related to mechanical components, electrical systems, and operator interaction. -
Regulatory Compliance
Facilitating market access by conforming to IEC safety standards often adopted or referenced by national and regional authorities for lawn and garden machinery safety certification. -
User Safety Enhancement
Reducing injury risks by prescribing clear safety distance requirements, protective guards, and labeling that alert operators and bystanders to potential dangers during use. -
Quality Assurance and Testing
Guiding comprehensive performance and endurance tests to validate durability and safe operation under normal and abnormal conditions. -
Environmental and Health Considerations
Addressing noise and vibration emissions that impact operator comfort and environmental noise pollution, critical for sustainable product acceptance.
