IEC 62885-3:2014 is applicable to wet cleaning appliances for household use for carpet cleaning in or under conditions similar to those in households. This part of IEC 62885 is not applicable to steam cleaning vacuums. The purpose of this standard is to: - specify the essential performance characteristics of wet cleaning appliances being of interest to users - describe methods for measuring these characteristics and - be complementary to the methods for dry vacuum cleaners in IEC 60312-1. Due to influence of environmental conditions, variations in time, origin of test materials and proficiency of the operator, most of the described test methods will give more reliable results when applied for comparative testing of a number of appliances at the same time, in the same laboratory and by the same operator. See IEC 60335-1 and IEC 60335-2-2 for safety requirements. Wet hard floor tests are under consideration and are intended to be published in a separate standard. This first edition cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 60312-2 published in 2010. This edition constitutes a technical revision. Abstract
Overview
IEC 62885-3:2014 - "Surface cleaning appliances - Part 3: Wet carpet cleaning appliances - Methods for measuring the performance" is the international test-method standard for household wet carpet cleaning appliances (extractors). It defines the performance characteristics of wet carpet cleaners and specifies laboratory methods to measure them. The standard applies to electrically operated wet carpet cleaning appliances used in household-like conditions and explicitly excludes steam cleaning vacuums.
Keywords: IEC 62885-3, wet carpet cleaning, performance testing, extractor, carpet cleaning appliances, test methods, IEC standard
Key topics and technical requirements
IEC 62885-3 describes controlled test procedures and required test conditions to evaluate essential performance characteristics. Major topics include:
- Wet cleaning effectiveness on carpet - standardized procedures to assess soil removal and visual appearance change.
- Re-soiling and drying time - methods to evaluate how quickly cleaned carpets dry and how susceptible they are to re-soiling.
- Liquid handling metrics - maximum usable capacity of dirt recovery receptacle and cleaning liquid tank, maximum flow rate of cleaning liquid, and pick-up rate of soiled liquid.
- Test conditioning and repeatability - requirements for atmospheric conditions, test materials (synthetic soil, carpet specifications), instrument calibration and operator proficiency to improve comparability.
- Miscellaneous performance and usability tests - motion resistance, life test, mass/weight in hand, dimensions, specific cleaning time, noise level and energy consumption.
- Test equipment and materials - guidelines for test carpets, soiling procedures, stroke patterns and grooming, plus reference to suppliers’ information (for convenience only).
The standard emphasizes that environmental conditions, test material origin and operator skill can influence results - hence the recommendation to perform comparative tests in the same laboratory, at the same time, with the same operator.
Practical applications and users
IEC 62885-3 is used to:
- Provide manufacturers with validated methods to quantify and compare extractor performance during product development and quality control.
- Support test laboratories and independent certification bodies in producing repeatable, comparable performance data for product specification and marketing claims.
- Help retailers and procurement teams evaluate models for purchase decisions and point-of-sale information.
- Inform regulators and standards bodies who reference harmonized test methods for consumer protection.
This standard is particularly relevant for designers of household wet carpet cleaners, laboratory test engineers, and product managers preparing technical specifications or performance claims.
