IEC 62933-1:2024 defines terms applicable to electrical energy storage (EES) systems including terms necessary for the definition of unit parameters, test methods, planning, installation, operation, environmental and safety issues. This terminology document is applicable to grid-connected systems able to extract electrical energy from an electric power system, store energy internally, and provide electrical energy to an electric power system. The step for charging and discharging an EES system can comprise an energy conversion. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2018. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) addition (with revision) of the entries developed during the edition 1 stability period and, therefore, included only in other IEC 62933 parts; b) addition of the entries developed during the edition 1 stability period and published in this document for the first time; c) complete revision of the entries already present in edition 1.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62933-1:2024 is the latest international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the vocabulary for Electrical Energy Storage (EES) systems. This second edition updates and replaces the first edition published in 2018 with comprehensive technical revisions. It standardizes terminology essential for understanding EES system components, planning, installation, operation, test methods, environmental concerns, and safety aspects. Applicable to grid-connected systems capable of extracting, storing, and supplying electrical energy, this standard supports interoperability, consistent communication, and improved decision-making in the electrical energy storage industry.
Key Topics
-
EES Systems Classification: Defines fundamental concepts and categories including long-duration, short-duration, hybrid, and emergency applications, facilitating clear differentiation across diverse EES technologies.
-
System Specifications: Covers crucial parameters such as duty cycles, points of connection (POC), service life, energy efficiency, and step response performances, which are vital for designing, evaluating, and operating EES systems.
-
Planning and Installation: Details subsystems architecture and fundamental planning concepts to ensure proper deployment aligning with system requirements and regulatory frameworks.
-
Operation Management: Includes terminology related to operating states, signals, procedures, and modes to support safe and efficient EES system utilization.
-
Environmental and Safety Issues: Establishes definitions pertaining to environmental impact and safety measures, promoting compliance with international safety standards and sustainable energy storage solutions.
-
Standardization and Harmonization: The vocabulary harmonizes with established resources such as the International Electrotechnical Vocabulary (IEV), IEC Glossary, and ISO Online Browsing Platform (OBP), ensuring global consistency.
Applications
IEC 62933-1:2024 is essential for:
-
Manufacturers and Designers: Facilitating a common language for system components, design specifications, and performance criteria to enhance product development and interoperability.
-
Grid Operators and Utilities: Enabling clear communication about system capabilities, operational parameters, and energy management strategies essential for grid stability and integration of renewable resources.
-
Regulatory and Standards Bodies: Providing a foundational reference to support regulations, safety guidelines, and certification processes related to electrical energy storage technologies.
-
Testing and Certification Laboratories: Offering standardized terminology for test methods, efficiency assessments, and safety evaluations to ensure reliable performance validation and compliance.
-
Project Planners and Installers: Assisting in precise planning, installation, and commissioning through well-defined system architecture and connection points.
Related Standards
