IEC 63128:2019 specifies the analogue control interface of controlgear which has the function of controlling the output of the controlgear. The output of the controlgear is controlled between minimum/off and maximum values by the voltage control device sinking the controlgear current source. This document does not specify safety requirements for the analogue interface of controlgear. Safety requirements are given in IEC 61347 (all parts).
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63128:2019 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies an analogue voltage dimming interface for electronic current sourcing controlgear. The standard addresses the functional requirements of the control interface for controllable electronic lighting systems, facilitating adjustable lighting output through analogue voltage signals. By defining consistent and interoperable methods for analogue dimming, IEC 63128:2019 supports manufacturers, system integrators, and end users in creating reliable and effective lighting control solutions. This standard is especially relevant for the advancement of energy-efficient lighting in both commercial and residential applications, without defining dedicated safety requirements, which are instead covered under IEC 61347 (all parts).
Key Topics
- Analogue Voltage Dimming Interface: The standard outlines the use of an analogue voltage signal to control output power levels of electronic light source controlgear, enabling smooth and continuous dimming from minimum/off to maximum output.
- Voltage Control Range: The control input voltage is specified between -20 V and +20 V to ensure robust operation and protection of the controlgear, with operational dimming achieved between 0 V and 11 V.
- Dimming Curve: IEC 63128:2019 provides a guide for mapping control voltage to light output, ensuring predictable dimming behavior and facilitating compatibility between devices from different manufacturers.
- Control Input Current: It standardizes the current sourced by the controlgear at the control input, typically within a 100 µA to 2 mA range, with the nominal value declared by the manufacturer.
- System Interconnection: The document supports the connection of multiple controllable lamp controlgear units to a single dimming control device, enhancing scalability and system design flexibility.
- Device Marking: The standard prescribes mandatory marking for compliant controlgear to support identification and ensure compatibility in system installation and maintenance.
Applications
- Commercial Lighting Systems: Used in office buildings, retail spaces, and industrial facilities to deliver customizable lighting experiences, energy savings, and compliance with building codes.
- Residential Lighting Control: Enables homeowners and smart home integrators to achieve flexible, user-friendly dimming capabilities for LED and other modern lighting technologies.
- Lighting Retrofit Projects: Essential for upgrading legacy lighting systems to modern electronic controlgear, improving performance and enabling integration with building management systems.
- OEM Lighting Product Design: Provides manufacturers with standardized requirements for control interfaces, ensuring that new products can interoperate smoothly with a wide range of dimming devices.
Related Standards
- IEC 61347 (all parts): Safety requirements for lamp controlgear, applicable for both general and specific lighting product types.
- IEC 62386 (all parts): Digital addressable lighting interface (DALI), focusing on digitally-based lighting control rather than analogue voltage.
- IEC 62756-1: Digital load side transmission lighting control.
- IEC 60050-845: International Electrotechnical Vocabulary – Lighting, supporting consistent terminology across lighting standards.
- ISO 2859-1: Sampling procedures for inspection by attributes, referenced for type test and conformity assessments.
