The purpose of IEC 63132-4:2020 is to establish, in a general way, suitable procedures and tolerances for the installation of a vertical Kaplan or propeller turbine. This document presents a typical assembly and whenever the word “turbine” is used in this document, it refers to a vertical Kaplan or propeller turbine. There are many possible ways to assemble a unit. The size of the machine, design of the machine, layout of the powerhouse or delivery schedule of the components are some of the elements that could result in additional steps, the elimination of some steps and/or assembly sequences. It is understood that a publication of this type will be binding only if, and to the extent that, both contracting parties have agreed upon it. This document excludes matters of purely commercial interest, except those inextricably bound up with the conduct of installation. The tolerances in this document have been established upon best practices and experience, although it is recognized that other standards specify different tolerances. Wherever this document specifies that documents, drawings or information is supplied by a manufacturer (or by manufacturers), each individual manufacturer will furnish the appropriate information for their own supply only.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63132-4:2020, issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), provides comprehensive guidance for the installation procedures and tolerances specific to vertical Kaplan or propeller turbines used in hydroelectric power generation. This international standard outlines best practices for assembling and embedding turbine components, aiming to ensure high-quality installation, mechanical integrity, and optimal performance of hydroelectric machinery. The document focuses on typical installation sequences while acknowledging that variations may occur depending on machine size, design, and powerhouse layout.
This standard supports engineers, project managers, and installation teams involved in hydroelectric projects by detailing systematic steps and clear tolerances that facilitate consistent and precise installation of vertical Kaplan or propeller turbines. It excludes commercial matters except those inseparably linked with installation activities.
Key Topics
- Installation Flowcharts: Visual guidance illustrating the assembly sequence of embedded turbine parts and mechanical components.
- Embedded Parts Installation: Procedures for benchmark setup, foundation installation, draft tube liner embedment, stay ring installation, and discharge ring placement with detailed tolerances.
- Mechanical Parts Assembly: Stepwise instructions for installing the turbine runner, guide vanes, shaft, couplings, head covers, servomotors, and adjustments.
- Tolerances and Measurements: Precise specifications for concentricity, elevation, level, parallelism, and dimensional inspections critical for ensuring mechanical alignment and structural integrity.
- Inspection and Testing: Concrete void testing, grout injection, corrosion protection, cleaning, painting, and final mechanical inspections before commissioning.
- Commissioning Guidelines: Steps for final unit alignment, coupling, guide vane adjustment, and preparing the turbine for operational tests.
Applications
IEC 63132-4:2020 is an essential resource for stakeholders in the design, assembly, installation, and commissioning of vertical Kaplan and propeller turbines in hydroelectric plants. Key applications include:
- Hydropower Plant Construction: Ensures reliable assembly and installation of turbines within new or refurbished hydroelectric power stations.
- Project Management: Helps coordinate installation schedules, resource allocation, and quality control for turbine delivery and setup.
- Quality Assurance: Specifies installation tolerances and inspections to confirm the accuracy and safety of turbine components before operation.
- Maintenance Planning: Provides detailed documentation that aids in routine checks and troubleshooting mechanical parts during the turbine lifecycle.
- Training and Standardization: Serves as a reference for educating installation teams and aligning different contractors to internationally accepted installation standards.
