The purpose of IEC 63132-1:2020 is to establish, in a general way, suitable procedures and tolerances for the installation of hydroelectric turbines and generators. This document presents a typical assembly. There are many possible ways to assemble a unit. The size of the machines, design of the machines, layout of the powerhouse and delivery schedule of the components are some of the elements that could result in additional steps, the elimination of some steps and/or assembly sequences. It is understood that a publication of this type will be binding only if, and to the extent that, both contracting parties have agreed upon it. Installations for refurbishment projects or for small hydro projects are not in the scope of this document. An agreement between all parties is necessary. This document excludes matters of purely commercial interest, except those inextricably bound up with the conduct of installation. The tolerances in this document have been established upon best practices and experience, although it is recognized that other standards specify different tolerances. Wherever this document specifies that documents, drawings or information is supplied by a manufacturer (or manufacturers), each individual manufacturer will furnish the appropriate information for their own supply only.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63132-1:2020 establishes internationally recognized guidance for the installation procedures and tolerances of hydroelectric turbines and generators. Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard outlines general principles and best practices to ensure proper alignment, assembly, and overall installation quality of large hydroelectric machines. It addresses typical assembly processes, providing flexibility for variations in machine size, powerhouse layout, and deployment schedules. While the document serves as a reference for contract agreements, it is not binding unless specifically agreed to by involved parties. Notably, it does not cover refurbishment or small hydro project installations.
Adhering to IEC 63132-1:2020 helps promote alignment between project owners, suppliers, and contractors, optimizing operational performance and reliability for new hydroelectric generation units.
Key Topics
IEC 63132-1:2020 covers essential aspects of installing hydroelectric machines, with focus areas including:
- Reference Axes and Planes: Establishing consistent reference centres, horizontal and vertical planes, and axes of rotation for alignment.
- Component Alignment: Guidance on concentricity, circularity, flatness, parallelism, and orientation to ensure components are positioned within specified tolerances.
- Assembly Definitions: Clarification of terms such as best centre, junctions, elevation, level, inclination, and shaft straightness to enable shared understanding among project teams.
- Critical Clearances:
- Runner diameter and clearances for reaction and impulse turbines
- Guide vane to guide vane, top, and bottom clearances
- Verticality and Magnetic Centre: Procedures to verify the verticality of shafts, stator cores, rotor poles, and align magnetic centers to optimize machine operation.
- Runout and Straightness: Methods for measuring deviation of the shaft and components from their ideal geometric paths.
- Best Practices: Recommendations for protecting sensitive surfaces, controlling weld-induced distortion, and maximizing the value of measurement data.
Applications
The guidance in IEC 63132-1:2020 provides practical value across various stages of large-scale hydroelectric power plant construction, including:
- Design Verification: Ensuring the installation process aligns with manufacturer drawings, technical specifications, and project requirements.
- Quality Control: Facilitating objective checks during assembly and before commissioning, preventing costly rework.
- Contractual Consistency: Providing a neutral set of procedures and tolerances to form the technical basis for contract agreements between plant owners, equipment suppliers, and contractors.
- Installation Records: Standardizing measurement techniques and reporting for as-built documentation, ensuring future maintainability and traceability.
- Training and Competence: Serving as a reference for project engineers, site supervisors, and quality inspectors to harmonize installation expertise.
- New Hydroelectric Projects: Supporting the deployment of vertical and horizontal hydroelectric turbines and generators in new installations.
