The purpose of IEC 63132-3:2020 is to establish, in a general way, suitable procedures and tolerances for the installation of a vertical Francis turbine or pump-turbine. This document presents a typical assembly and whenever the word “turbine” is used in this document, it refers to a vertical Francis turbine or a pump-turbine. There are many possible ways to assemble a unit. The size of the machine, design of the machine, layout of the powerhouse or delivery schedule of the components are some of the elements that could result in additional steps, the elimination of some steps and/or assembly sequences. It is understood that a publication of this type will be binding only if, and to the extent that, both contracting parties have agreed upon it. This document excludes matters of purely commercial interest, except those inextricably bound up with the conduct of installation. The tolerances in this document have been established upon best practices and experience, although it is recognized that other standards specify different tolerances. Wherever this document specifies that documents, drawings or information is supplied by a manufacturer (or by manufacturers), each individual manufacturer will furnish the appropriate information for their own supply only.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63132-3:2020 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) offering guidance for installation procedures and tolerances for hydroelectric machines, specifically focusing on vertical Francis turbines or pump-turbines. This standard establishes suitable installation protocols, detailing assembly sequences, quality assurance measures, and tolerance criteria to ensure accurate, efficient, and reliable turbine installation.
Designed to accommodate various machine sizes, designs, and powerhouse layouts, IEC 63132-3 provides a generalized framework applicable to typical vertical Francis turbine installations. The standard emphasizes best practices drawn from extensive industry experience while acknowledging that specific manufacturer information and alternative tolerances may apply.
Key Topics
Installation Flowchart and Procedures
- Detailed step-by-step guidance for both embedded and mechanical parts installation.
- Typical assembly sequences encompassing benchmarks setup, embedded pipes, draft tube liner, stay ring, spiral case, and turbine mechanical parts.
- Clear division of installation phases with formal handoffs between embedded parts and mechanical assemblies.
Tolerances and Quality Checks
- Specific tolerances for concentricity, elevation, circularity, level, and parallelism to ensure precision during assembly.
- Procedures for dimensional inspections post-embedment and post-concreting phases.
- Quality assurance tests like draft tube liner pressure tests, grout injections, and void testing.
Mechanical Components Installation
- Detailed installation steps for the turbine runner, shaft, guide vanes, head cover, seals, bearings, servomotors, and generator coupling.
- Alignment protocols crucial for optimal turbine performance and longevity.
- Final installation steps phase including cleaning, painting, and commissioning.
Documentation and Manufacturer Coordination
- Emphasis on manufacturer-supplied documents and drawings for individual components to ensure correct installation steps.
- Clarity on contractual applicability of the standard to installation agreements.
- Exclusion of purely commercial considerations unless related to installation conduct.
Applications
IEC 63132-3:2020 serves as a crucial reference for engineers, project managers, installation teams, and quality assurance professionals involved in the construction and commissioning of vertical Francis turbines or pump-turbines in hydroelectric power plants. Key applications include:
- Guiding precise installation procedures to reduce operational risks and ensure system reliability.
- Establishing standardized tolerances for parts alignment and assembly assisting performance optimization.
- Serving as a benchmark in contractual agreements for turbine installation projects.
- Assisting in creating detailed project schedules aligning installation steps with powerhouse deliveries.
- Enabling consistent quality assurance practices and inspection criteria to minimize rework and enhance safety.
Related Standards
To complement IEC 63132-3:2020, professionals may also consider the broader IEC 63132 series and other IEC standards related to hydraulic turbines and hydroelectric machinery, such as:
- IEC 63132-1: Guidance on installation procedures for other turbine types or configurations.
- IEC 60041: Field acceptance tests to hydroelectric turbines, guiding performance verification after installation.
- IEC 60445: Basic and safety principles for electrical equipment for hydroelectric plants.
- Relevant ISO standards for construction tolerances and mechanical installation best practices.
By integrating IEC 63132-3 with these related standards, hydroelectric projects can achieve comprehensive compliance and quality assurance throughout the turbine installation lifecycle.
