IEC 63241-2-14:2025 applies to planers. This document is to be used in conjunction with the first edition of IEC 63241-1:2023. This document supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses in IEC 63241-1, so as to convert it into the IEC Standard: Particular requirements for hand-held planers. Where a particular subclause of IEC 63241-1 is not mentioned in this document, that subclause applies as far as reasonable. Where this document states "addition", "modification" or "replacement", the relevant text in IEC 63241-1 is to be adapted accordingly.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63241-2-14:2025 sets out particular requirements for hand-held planers within the IEC 63241 series on electric motor-operated tools – dust measurement procedures. Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard is designed to be used in conjunction with IEC 63241-1:2023, providing essential guidance for the dust measurement process specific to hand-held planers. The standard supplements or modifies the general clauses in Part 1, ensuring tests and requirements address the unique functions and setup of planers. This document is crucial for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and stakeholders in compliance, safety, and occupational health related to electric planers.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
IEC 63241-2-14:2025 applies specifically to electric motor-operated hand-held planers. It outlines how the general provisions in IEC 63241-1:2023 are to be adapted for this tool type. -
Test Procedures
The standard refines test procedures for dust measurement, focusing on the materials and methods used when testing planers. It specifies conditions for planing wood, including the use of beech with controlled humidity, operating depths, and feed forces. -
Instrumentation
Guidance is provided on the instrumentation to be used, in accordance with the main standard, ensuring accurate and reliable dust measurement results. -
Reporting Requirements
The standard aligns with IEC 63241-1 in specifying the types of information that must be documented and reported following testing, promoting traceability and consistency across the industry. -
Planer Definition and Set-up
A planer is defined as a tool for removing surface material using a parallel cutting head. The detailed test setup includes operator positioning and operating cycles, supporting reproducible and meaningful dust emission results.
Applications
IEC 63241-2-14:2025 is essential for:
-
Manufacturers of Power Tools: Ensures new and existing hand-held planers conform to internationally recognized dust emission requirements, supporting product safety and market access.
