IEC 63241-3-3:2025 applies to transportable planers and thicknessers intended to plane wood. This document is to be used in conjunction with the first edition of IEC 63241-1:2023. This document supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses in IEC 63241-1, so as to convert it into the IEC Standard: Particular requirements for transportable planers and thicknessers. Where a particular subclause of IEC 63241-1 is not mentioned in this document, that subclause applies as far as reasonable. Where this document states "addition", "modification" or "replacement", the relevant text in IEC 63241-1 is to be adapted accordingly. NOTE The attention of National Committees is drawn to the fact that equipment manufacturers and testing organizations can need a transitional period following publication of a new, amended or revised IEC publication in which to make products in accordance with the new requirements and to equip themselves for conducting new or revised tests. It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 36 months from the date of publication.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63241-3-3:2025 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies particular requirements for dust measurement procedures related to transportable planers and thicknessers. These machines are electric motor-operated tools intended for planing wood, and this part of the standard is designed to supplement and modify the general requirements laid out in IEC 63241-1:2023. By defining specific testing conditions, terms, and procedures, IEC 63241-3-3:2025 aims to ensure consistency, safety, and performance in measuring dust emissions from planers and thicknessers in a variety of working environments.
Key Topics
-
Scope of Application:
This standard applies specifically to transportable planers and thicknessers used for wood processing, detailing procedures for accurate dust measurement. -
Terms and Definitions:
Detailed descriptions are provided for “planer” and “thicknesser,” ensuring industry-wide consistency in understanding tool functionality. -
Test Procedures:
- Clear operating conditions for both planers and thicknessers are established, including workpiece material, tool setup, and blade requirements.
- Emphasis is placed on using newly sharpened blades and controlling feed forces and speeds to simulate real usage.
- Indicates how to carry out multiple planing operations to reflect true working conditions.
-
Instrumentation:
Calls for the use of suitable measuring equipment as described in IEC 63241-1:2023 to ensure accuracy and repeatability. -
Reporting Requirements:
Specifies the information to be included in test reports, such as details on cycle time extensions if the required number of workpieces is not completed within 10 minutes.
Applications
Adopting IEC 63241-3-3:2025 provides substantial practical value across the wood processing and manufacturing industries:
-
Manufacturers:
Tool manufacturers can use this standard to evaluate and improve the dust containment efficiency of their transportable planers and thicknessers before market release, ensuring compliance with international safety requirements. -
Testing Laboratories:
Accredited labs rely on these procedures to provide consistent, comparable dust emission data, supporting certification and regulatory compliance. -
Occupational Health and Safety:
By defining dust measurement protocols, the standard facilitates assessment of workplace exposure, contributing to worker protection and compliance with occupational health standards. -
National and Regional Regulators:
Regulatory bodies can reference this standard when establishing or updating local requirements for dust control in woodworking and furniture manufacturing sectors. -
Procurement and Specification:
Buyers and end-users can request evidence of compliance with IEC 63241-3-3 as part of procurement processes, ensuring they select machines with proven dust management capabilities.
