IEC 63272:2024 specifies the performance and functional characteristics of the on-site AC interruptible power supply systems and applies to new nuclear facilities and newly installed or upgraded on-site AC interruptible power supply systems. The specific design requirements for the components of the power supply system are defined by the IEC standards listed in the normative references and are outside the scope of this document. The purpose of this document is to provide high level requirements for the design of on-site AC interruptible power supply systems as part of the overall electrical distribution system in a nuclear facility. This document defines the requirements for an electrical designer to establish the design of the AC interruptible electrical power supply for nuclear facilities. It is used in conjunction with Level 1 standard IEC 63046.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63272:2024 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the performance and functional characteristics of on-site AC interruptible power supply systems in nuclear facilities. This standard focuses on new nuclear facilities as well as newly installed or upgraded on-site AC interruptible power supply systems. It provides high-level design requirements intended for electrical designers involved in establishing AC interruptible power supplies within the overall electrical distribution systems of nuclear installations. While IEC 63272:2024 sets out the broad requirements, the detailed design of power supply components refers to other specific IEC standards cited in the normative references. This document complements IEC 63046 (Level 1 standard) and serves as a crucial guideline in designing reliable, safe, and compliant AC power systems in nuclear environments.
Key Topics
- System Requirements
The standard details general and specific requirements for AC interruptible power supply systems, including system configuration, architecture, and integration with off-site power sources. - Safety Classifications
IEC 63272 defines safety classifications distinguishing between safety-classified and non-safety-classified power supply systems, especially relevant for nuclear power plants (NPPs) and other nuclear facilities. - Power System Performance
Operational limits such as voltage ranges, frequency tolerances, current carrying capacity, and protections against overvoltage, undervoltage, electromagnetic interference, harmonics, and geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) are specified. - Redundancy and Reliability
The standard emphasizes redundancy, equipment qualification, separation, and single failure criteria to avoid interruptions critical to nuclear safety. - Equipment Requirements
Detailed considerations cover standby and alternate power generators, fuel systems, generator mission times, electrical power source transfers, programmable devices, electrical equipment ratings, load sequencing, and protection systems. - Maintenance and Monitoring
Guidelines for electrical equipment maintenance, ageing considerations, status monitoring, periodic testing, and commissioning insure ongoing system integrity and compliance throughout facility lifecycle.
Applications
IEC 63272:2024 is designed for planners, designers, and engineers involved in:
- Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) - ensuring uninterrupted AC power supply vital for reactor safety and critical loads.
- Other Nuclear Facilities - including research reactors and nuclear fuel cycle installations requiring robust power supply systems with interruptible capabilities.
- New Builds and Upgrades - applicable to new nuclear installations as well as overhaul and enhancement projects to upgrade existing power supply systems to the latest standards.
- Safety-Critical Power Systems Design - assisting electrical designers in complying with stringent safety and functional requirements prescribed for nuclear environments.
- Electrical Distribution System Integration - offering criteria for integration of on-site AC interruptible power supplies with the overall electrical infrastructure and off-site power sources.
Related Standards

- Other IEC Standards Referenced in Normative Annexes – These cover component-specific design and performance requirements, including power transformers, circuit breakers, standby generators, and protection devices.
- ISO/IEC Directives – Framework documents governing the preparation and formatting of IEC standards.
Practical Value
IEC 63272:2024 enhances the safety and reliability of nuclear facility electrical power systems by:
- Establishing consistent international criteria for on-site AC interruptible power systems.
- Reducing the risk of power supply failures that could impact nuclear safety.
- Guiding effective design practices for integrating multiple power sources and backup systems.
- Supporting compliance with regulatory and licensing requirements for nuclear installations.
- Facilitating engineering communication and harmonization across global nuclear projects.
By adhering to IEC 63272:2024, stakeholders optimize operational resilience, mitigate risks of power interruptions, and achieve standardized best practices essential for nuclear facility electrical power systems management.
