IEC 63494‑2-1:2026 specifies the interchangeability requirements of an electro-mechanical interface with four-pin extra-low-voltage (ELV) twist-lock interface – type ZB18 for use in lighting systems. This twist-lock interface has four electrical contacts that are suitable for ELV voltages. Two connections are intended for supply power and two are intended for digital communication. This document specifies interchangeability related requirements for mechanical, electrical, ambient conditions, positional orientation, communication protocol and pin assignments for the interface. Specific requirements for the devices that can utilize the interface such as sensors, communication modules, cameras, etc., are not within the scope of this document. This document does not specify the following aspects: - the lighting technology, - the illumination performance, - electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63494-2-1:2026 is an International Standard published by the IEC that defines the interchangeability requirements for a four-pin extra-low-voltage (ELV) twist-lock interface - type ZB18 - intended for use in lighting systems. This standard establishes the mechanical, electrical, and environmental criteria for the electro-mechanical interface, ensuring reliable connection and interoperability between luminaires and compatible devices. The twist-lock interface described enables both power delivery and digital communication, facilitating the integration of digital controls and smart modules within lighting installations.
The standard forms part of the IEC 63494-2 series, complementing IEC 63494-1, the general safety standard for electro-mechanical interfaces in lighting systems. IEC 63494-2-1:2026 primarily covers interface features and performance requirements, supporting manufacturers and designers in developing products that are interoperable across various lighting ecosystems.
Key Topics
- Four-pin ELV twist-lock (Type ZB18): Specifies a robust physical interface for connecting lighting devices using ELV for safety and versatility.
- Interchangeability: Defines requirements for mechanical dimensions, positional orientation, pin assignments, and communication protocol to maximize compatibility.
- Mechanical Safety: Includes measures on physical protection during device insertion/removal, retention force, torque, bending moments, and resistance to mechanical stress.
- Electrical Safety: Addresses electric shock protection, insulation requirements, dielectric strength, and ensures reliable contact resistance.
- Ambient Condition Requirements: Outlines ingress protection (IP rating) and performance under rough environmental conditions to safeguard long-term functionality.
- Testing and Gauges: Provides structured test sequences and gauge definitions to objectively verify compliance with the standard.
Applications
Practical Value in Lighting Systems
Adopting IEC 63494-2-1:2026 ensures:
- Interoperability: Enables manufacturers and lighting system integrators to specify and build products that work seamlessly across different brands and system types using the ZB18 twist-lock interface.
- Future-proof Solutions: Provides a common platform for connecting luminaire-mounted devices such as sensors, communication modules, and control units, facilitating smart lighting upgrades and modular system design.
- Reliability & Safety: Enhances user and installer safety in ELV environments by standardizing dimensions, contact materials, and installation procedures. Improved ingress protection and robust mechanical testing support durability in both indoor and outdoor applications.
- Reduced Installation Time: The twist-lock mechanism simplifies and speeds up installation and maintenance, reducing downtime for lighting systems.
Typical Use Cases
- LED Luminaires: Integrating photocells, motion detectors, or wireless communication nodes for smart city lighting.
- Commercial/Outdoor Lighting: Rapid deployment or field replacement of control modules, reducing service costs.
- Architectural Lighting: Modular upgrades or customization of luminaires without alteration of core hardware.
