IEC 63522-15:2024 is used for testing electromechanical elementary relays (electromechanical relays, reed relays, reed contacts, reed switches and technology combination of these) and evaluates their ability to perform under expected conditions of transportation, storage and all aspects of operational use. This document defines a standard test method that applies defined loads to relay terminals (direct axial pulls, bending or twisting) as they can be present in assembled configurations or during handling. In addition, it covers torque stress for nuts and threaded terminals as they are likely to be experienced during normal assembly operations.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63522-15:2024 is a crucial international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies test methods for assessing the robustness of terminals in electromechanical elementary relays. This includes electromechanical relays, reed relays, reed contacts, reed switches, and their technology combinations. The standard evaluates these relays' ability to withstand stresses encountered during transportation, storage, and all normal operational uses, ensuring terminal integrity and performance reliability.
This document defines standardized test procedures that apply specific mechanical loads-such as direct axial pulls, bending, twisting, and torque stresses-to relay terminals. These tests simulate conditions relays encounter during assembly, handling, and use. The standard covers various terminal types, including screw terminals, screwless terminals, flat quick-connect terminations, and threaded terminals with nuts.
Key Topics
-
Test Procedures for Relay Terminals:
- Application of defined mechanical loads (axial pulls, bending, twisting) on terminals.
- Torque stress testing on nuts and threaded terminals simulating assembly conditions.
- Use of recognized IEC precedents for testing different terminal types (IEC 60999-1 for screw/screwless terminals, IEC 61210 for flat quick-connect terminations, and IEC 60068-2-21 for others).
-
Sample Requirements:
- Minimum of three relay samples tested.
- At least three terminations of the same size and type per device under test (DUT).
- Ensuring tests on one termination do not affect others in assembled conditions.
-
Testing Conditions:
- Devices tested in clean, new condition and mounted either as in service or according to manufacturer instructions.
- Ambient test conditions comply with IEC 63522-0.
-
Evaluation Criteria:
- Visual inspection and dimensional verification post-test according to IEC 63522-1.
- Measurement of coil resistance (IEC 63522-3) and contact-circuit resistance (IEC 63522-6).
- DUTs must show no damage or malfunction; all parameters must stay within product specifications.
-
Test Reporting:
- Comprehensive documentation of the testing process, conditions, and individual device evaluations.
- Inclusion of test method, setup, initial conditions, number of devices tested, and other relevant observations.
Applications
IEC 63522-15:2024 is highly applicable to manufacturers, designers, and quality assurance teams involved in:
-
Electromechanical Relay Manufacturing
Ensures terminals are robust and maintain electrical and mechanical integrity throughout the relay’s life cycle, meeting regulatory and safety requirements. -
Component Reliability Testing
Provides standardized test methods to evaluate terminal durability during shipping, handling, and installation, reducing failures related to terminal deformation or loosening. -
Assembly and Maintenance Processes
Assesses terminal torque resistance and mechanical stress tolerances experienced during assembly, promoting reliable connection integrity. -
Quality Control and Certification
Supports compliance testing aligned with international norms, facilitating market access and customer confidence through documented robustness.
