IEC 60999-1:1999 Applies to screw-type and screwless-type clamping units for connecting devices, either as separate entities or as integral parts of equipment, for the connection of electrical copper conductors (complying with IEC 60228), rigid (solid or stranded) and/or flexible, having a cross-sectional area of 0.5 mm2 up to and including 35 mm2 and equivalent AWG sizes with a rated voltage not exceeding 1 000 V a.c. with a frequency up to and including 1 000 Hz, and 1 500 V d.c.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60999-1:1999 sets out the safety requirements for screw-type and screwless-type clamping units intended for the connection of electrical copper conductors. This international standard, developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), applies to clamping units used as standalone devices or as part of electrical equipment. The standard covers both rigid (solid or stranded) and flexible copper conductors, with cross-sectional areas ranging from 0.2 mm² up to and including 35 mm², or equivalent AWG sizes. The rated voltage covered does not exceed 1,000 V a.c. (up to 1,000 Hz) and 1,500 V d.c.
The primary aim of IEC 60999-1 is to ensure safety, quality, and reliability in electrical connections by defining general and particular requirements for different types of clamping units.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
- Applies to clamping units for electrical copper conductors compliant with IEC 60228.
- Includes both screw-type and screwless-type units, whether separate or equipment-integrated.
- Designed primarily for connecting unprepared conductors.
- Excludes devices for crimping/soldering, data or signaling circuits, and certain quick-connect types (covered by other IEC standards).
-
Definitions
- Clear terminology for clamping units, terminals, connecting devices, and conductor types.
- Differentiates between universal and non-universal clamping units, as well as between screw-type and screwless mechanisms.
-
Safety and Performance
- Requirements address mechanical clamping reliability and safe electrical connection.
- Specifies constructional criteria and testing protocols to ensure user safety and equipment protection under normal use.
- Mandates compliance tests, including mechanical, thermal, and electrical evaluations.
- Highlights the need for correct contact pressure and prevention of conductor slippage.
-
Rated Connecting Capacity
- Standardizes clamping unit connection sizes: 0.2, 0.34, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.5, 2.5, 4, 6, 10, 16, 25, and 35 mm², with equivalence to AWG sizes.
Applications
IEC 60999-1:1999 is widely referenced in electrical manufacturing, installation, and inspection regarding the following:
- Electrical Panels and Control Cabinets
- Ensures secure, reliable connections in distribution boards and switchgear.
- Appliance and Equipment Manufacturing
- Defines connection methods for internal copper wiring in consumer and industrial devices.
- Building Wiring Installations
- Guides safe terminal block usage in residential, commercial, and industrial wiring.
- Electrical Component Design
- Informs engineers and designers when specifying or developing electrical connectors and terminal blocks.
- Compliance and Quality Assurance
- Used by testing labs and certification bodies to evaluate product safety and conformity.
By providing clear guidelines, the standard enhances safety and interoperability in diverse electrical applications.
Related Standards
To ensure full compliance and integration, IEC 60999-1:1999 should be considered alongside related standards:
- IEC 60228 – Conductors of insulated cables
- IEC 60344 – Calculation of resistance for copper conductors
- IEC 61545 – Connecting devices for aluminium conductors
- IEC 60998-2-3 / IEC 60998-2-4 – Quick connect and insulation piercing connectors
- IEC 61210 – Flat quick-connect terminations
- ISO 2081 / ISO 2093 – Electrodeposited coatings relevant to electrical contacts
Practical Value
Compliance with IEC 60999-1 ensures that electrical connections withstand operational stresses, minimize risk of electrical faults, and support international trade by harmonizing requirements across markets. Manufacturers, installers, and safety inspectors benefit from reliable benchmarks for design, production, and testing, ultimately safeguarding end users and supporting system performance.
For up-to-date references and amendments, verification with the latest IEC publications is recommended.
