IEC 63522-43:2025 This document is used for testing along with the appropriate severities and conditions for measurements and tests designed to assess the ability of specimens to perform under expected conditions of transportation, storage and all aspects of operational use. This document defines a standard test method for evaluation of appropriate materials having appropriate values of tracking resistance.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63522-43:2025 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focused on electrical relays testing and measurements. This part, titled Proof Tracking Index (PTI), specifies a standardized test method to evaluate the tracking resistance of insulating materials used in electrical relays. The PTI determines the material’s ability to withstand electrical stress combined with environmental factors such as contaminants and moisture, simulating real-world conditions during transportation, storage, and operational use.
This standard is critical for ensuring the reliability and safety of insulating materials in relays, which are key components in electrical systems. The PTI test involves applying AC voltage with a contaminated water solution to specimens and measuring their resistance to tracking failure and sustained flames, thus qualifying materials for safe usage.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose
IEC 63522-43:2025 addresses the testing of relay insulation materials by simulating environmental and electrical stresses. It establishes a uniform method to measure resistance to tracking, which is the progressive formation of conductive paths leading to insulation failure. -
Proof Tracking Index (PTI)
The PTI quantifies the test voltage level (in volts) at which insulating materials can endure 50 drops of contaminated solution without tracking failure or persistent flames (>2 seconds). Higher PTI indicates better tracking resistance. -
Test Procedure
The standard references IEC 60112 as the test method, using AC voltages from 100 V to 600 V combined with test solution A (contaminated water) applied to flat specimen surfaces (minimum 15 mm × 15 mm and thickness ≥ 3 mm). The specimen undergoes repeated droplet applications until failure or completion. -
Material Group Classification
PTI values categorize materials into four groups:- Group I: PTI ≥ 600 V
- Group II: 400 V ≤ PTI < 600 V
- Group IIIa: 175 V ≤ PTI < 400 V
- Group IIIb: 100 V ≤ PTI < 175 V
-
Evaluation Criteria
Testing five specimens is standard; if one fails, another five are tested. A single failure across ten specimens results in a "pass." Test reports must document material descriptions, test conditions, voltage, number of drops, and any failures or flame occurrences.
Applications
-
Electrical Relay Manufacturing
Manufacturers use IEC 63522-43:2025 to verify the insulation materials’ resistance to tracking, ensuring product durability under operational electrical stresses and environmental contaminants. -
Quality Assurance and Compliance
Helps certification bodies and quality assurance teams assess conformance with international electrical safety and performance regulations. -
Design and Material Selection
Electrical engineers and designers apply PTI values to select suitable insulating materials that meet application-specific voltage and environmental conditions, improving reliability in power distribution, industrial controls, and automation systems. -
Safety Assessment
Lower tracking tendency materials reduce the risk of tracking failures that can cause insulation breakdowns, fire hazards, or relay malfunction, thereby enhancing safety in electrical installations.
