IEC 81714-3:2004 Specifies requirements concerning the classification of connect nodes assigned to graphical symbols, being a representation of functional and product concepts. Due to the strong interrelation between the product and its corresponding graphical representation, identical classification principles are applied for both the classification of connect nodes of products as well as for the classification of networks and their representation by graphical symbols in computer-aided systems. It has the status of a horizontal standard in accordance with IEC Guide 108.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 81714-3:2004 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is part of the IEC 81714 series, which addresses the design of graphical symbols used in technical product documentation. Specifically, Part 3-Classification of connect nodes, networks, and their encoding-establishes standardized requirements for classifying connect nodes and networks, which are fundamental for representing functional and product-related concepts in graphical symbols. This standard applies the same classification principles to both the physical connect nodes of products and their representation in computer-aided design (CAD) and documentation systems. IEC 81714-3 is considered a horizontal standard under IEC Guide 108, promoting harmonization across various technical areas.
Key Topics
- Classification of Connect Nodes:
Defines standardized classes of connect nodes (such as electrical, mechanical, and functional nodes) and prescribes specific code formats for their representation. - Encoding of Networks:
Outlines the principles for encoding the types of networks that connect nodes, ensuring consistent graphical representation in technical documentation. - Data Element Specifications:
Provides formal definitions for connect-node codes and network codes, supporting integration into computer-aided systems and data dictionaries (such as IEC 61360). - Compatibility With CAE/CAD:
Supports seamless usage within computer-aided engineering and drawing systems, ensuring consistent graphical symbol usage across disciplines. - Interoperability:
Enables uniform understanding and data exchange by standardizing how connect nodes and networks are classified and represented worldwide.
Applications
IEC 81714-3:2004 offers practical value across various industries and engineering domains concerned with technical documentation:
- Technical Drawing and CAD Systems:
Ensures that graphical symbols for products, assemblies, and networks are classified and encoded in a standardized way, facilitating clear, unambiguous diagrams. - Product Design and Documentation:
Supports engineers and technical writers in producing internationally recognizable documentation for electrical, mechanical, and other technical products. - Automation and Digital Systems:
Assists with the accurate digital representation of interconnections in automated systems, supporting Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing initiatives. - Integration Into Data Dictionaries:
The defined codes are compatible with the IEC 61360 Component Data Dictionary, enhancing semantic interoperability for data exchange, storage, and reuse. - Standardization Across Disciplines:
Provides a unified classification system for connect nodes and networks, beneficial for multidisciplinary teams working on complex systems or integrated product development.
