IEC/TR 62572-4:2020, which is a Technical Report, provides guidelines for optical connector end-face cleaning methods for receptacle style optical transceivers. It includes details about handling receptacle style optical transceivers, internal structures of optical transceivers, information on cleaning tools and machines, applicable cleaning methods, and cleaning procedures. Receptacle style optical transceivers as well as optical fibre patch cords are handled by operators and maintenance staff of optical network systems. This document can be used as a guideline to prepare instruction manuals for the operators and maintenance staff of optical network systems. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2013. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - addition of terms and definitions on multifibre connector interface optical transceivers; - addition of cleaning methods for multifibre connector interface type optical transceivers; - updating URLs for reference websites.
Abstract
Overview
IEC TR 62572-4:2020 is a Technical Report from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that provides practical guidelines for optical connector end-face cleaning methods specifically for receptacle style optical transceivers (e.g., SFP, XFP, QSFP, CFP). This second edition (2020) replaces the 2013 edition and adds definitions and cleaning methods for multifibre connector interfaces (MPO/MTP) and updates reference URLs. The document is intended as a reference for manufacturers, operators and maintenance staff to reduce contamination-related failures and to prepare user and maintenance manuals.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose
- Guidance on handling, storage, installation, connection and removal of receptacle style optical transceivers.
- Emphasis on preventing contamination transfer between patch cords and transceiver receptacles.
- Internal transceiver structures
- Differentiation between single‑fibre and multifibre connector interfaces and variations such as stub, lens and plate-contact types that affect cleaning approach.
- Cleaning tools and machines
- Overview of typical cleaning tools: reel-type, stick-type, pen-type cleaners; gas and vacuum cleaning systems; air dusters; and wet-cleaning processes.
- Tables mapping applicable tools to transceiver internal structures and connector types.
- Cleaning procedures
- Step-by-step procedures and recommended practices (annexes) for different tool types and connector interfaces, including inspection guidance.
- Inspection and verification
- Examples of visual inspection instruments and methods to verify end-face cleanliness before mating connectors.
- Operational guidance
- Recommendations for storage, abnormality handling, and safe use by operators and maintenance teams.
Practical applications and who should use it
- Network operators and maintenance staff who handle optical patch cords and pluggable transceivers in data centers and telecom installations.
- Field technicians performing connector cleaning, inspection, and transceiver servicing.
- Technical authors and product teams preparing user manuals, service instructions, and maintenance SOPs for optical network equipment.
- Manufacturers and integrators seeking to standardize cleaning procedures to improve reliability and reduce downtime due to contamination or physical damage.
Related standards (for further reference)
- IEC TR 62627-01 - guidance on cleaning optical connector plugs and adaptors
- IEC 61754 series - connector interface standards (e.g., IEC 61754-7 for MPO, IEC 61754-4 for SC)
- Other parts of the IEC reliability series for fibre optic active components
By following IEC TR 62572-4:2020 guidance for optical connector cleaning, organizations can improve link reliability, reduce contamination-induced failures, and implement consistent maintenance procedures across single‑fibre and multifibre transceiver interfaces.
