Specifies requirements (chemical composition, mechanical properties, appearance and soundness, machining allowance and dimensional tolerances, residual imbalance, marking) for the manufacture and supply of rolled, forged or cast solid wheels of unalloyed steels. Also deals with information to be supplied by the purchaser, classification, manufacture, inspection, delivery. Annnex A describes a procedure for shot peening web surfaces of wheels. In addition, the requirements of ISO 404 are applicable.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1005-6:1994 - Railway rolling stock material - Part 6: Solid wheels for tractive and trailing stock - Technical delivery conditions defines the technical delivery requirements for rolled, forged or cast solid wheels made from unalloyed steels. It specifies what wheel manufacturers and purchasers must agree and document for manufacture, inspection and delivery, and it includes an informative Annex A on a shot peening procedure for wheel web surfaces. The requirements of ISO 404 are also applicable.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and classification
- Covers steel grades, heat-treatment conditions (normalized N, rim quenched & tempered T, special immersion quenched E), testing categories (A, B) and tolerance categories (Y, Z).
- Chemical composition and mechanical properties
- Limits and test requirements for product and cast analyses, tensile/impact (category A) or hardness-based requirements (category B).
- Appearance and soundness
- Dimensional tolerances and machining allowances
- Degree of finish (unmachined → ready-for-assembly) and dimensional tolerance options per purchaser agreement; links with ISO 1005-8 for dimensional and balancing requirements.
- Residual imbalance and balancing
- Static balancing, allowable residual imbalance and correction methods; options for marking residual imbalance on the wheel.
- Inspection, sampling and testing
- Responsibilities, types and frequency of checks, sampling preparation, retest rules and certification procedures.
- Manufacture and quality control
- Steelmaking and manufacturing processes, heat treatment, removal of defects, identification during manufacture, machining and correction of imbalance, shot peening (Annex A).
- Marking and delivery
- Mandatory and optional marking of wheels, protection against corrosion and mechanical damage during transport.
Practical applications and users
ISO 1005-6:1994 is used by:
- Wheel manufacturers and foundries specifying production and acceptance criteria for solid wheels
- Railway OEMs and rolling stock designers defining procurement requirements
- Procurement engineers and purchasers who must specify steel grade, heat treatment, testing/tolerance categories and optional tests
- Quality assurance, inspection bodies and maintenance workshops performing acceptance testing, magnetic particle and ultrasonic inspections
- Standards and regulatory bodies aligning wheel material specifications across regions
Related standards
- ISO 404 (applicable general technical delivery requirements)
