Specifies the requirements for the assembly by press fitting or shrink fitting onto axles of solid wheels, wheel centres and other components. It also specifies the dimensions and tolerances of the completed assembly and the conditions of inspection and supply. Applies to certain types of axles and wheels, to plain or roller axle box bearings and to plain or roller traction motor bearings.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 1005-7:1982 (Railway rolling stock material - Wheelsets)
ISO 1005-7:1982 specifies quality requirements for wheelsets used on tractive and trailing rolling stock. It defines the requirements for assembling solid wheels, wheel centres (including tyred wheels) and other axle-mounted components (brake discs, gear wheels, dynamo pulleys, etc.) onto axles by press fitting or shrink fitting, and covers dimensions, tolerances, inspection and supply conditions. The standard applies to wheelsets with plain or roller axle-box bearings and plain or roller traction‑motor/final‑drive bearings.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope of components: solid wheels, wheel centres, assembled wheel centres with tyres, and axle-mounted accessories specified by the purchaser.
- Assembly methods: detailed procedures for press fitting and shrink fitting, including preparatory work, lubrication and thermal condition requirements.
- Interference fits: purchaser and manufacturer agree interference ranges between wheel bores and axle seats; values must meet proving-thrust test conditions.
- Dimensional tolerances: wheelset dimensions and tolerances are to be specified with reference to tolerance categories and ISO limits and fits (ISO/R 286).
- Mechanical and material testing: two testing categories are recognized (material/treatment and testing regimes) and linked to application (e.g., passenger vs freight service).
- Electrical resistance: the electrical resistance of each completed wheelset shall not exceed 0.01 Ω when tested per the standard.
- Balancing and unbalance limits: balancing requirements and permissible dynamic unbalance are tied to maximum operating speed and service type (tractive, trailing, passenger, freight); purchaser specifies requirements.
- Identification and traceability: stamping rules for serial numbers, inspection dates and purchaser/manufacturer marks; marking locations and character style are defined.
- Inspection and acceptance: responsibilities for inspection, proving-thrust tests, and recording of results are set out; purchaser supplies order-specific requirements and drawings.
Practical applications - who uses this standard
- Wheelset manufacturers and assembly workshops for establishing consistent press‑ and shrink‑fit procedures, quality control and documentation.
- Railway administrations and procurement engineers when drafting purchase orders and technical specifications for wheelsets.
- Maintenance, overhaul and test facilities for acceptance testing, balancing, electrical continuity checks and stamping/traceability.
- OEMs and component suppliers (brakes, traction components) to ensure compatibility and assembly requirements are met.
Related standards and notes
- Related Parts of ISO 1005: ISO 1005-1 through ISO 1005-6 (tyres, axles, wheel materials and solid wheels).
- ISO 404 (general technical delivery requirements), ISO/R 286 (limits and fits) and ISO 1101/1 (geometrical tolerancing) are referenced for dimensional, material and delivery rules.
- Practical tip: ISO 1005-7:1982 establishes purchaser/manufacturer responsibilities-always attach relevant drawings and specify any deviations, assembly method, balancing, and inspection conditions in the order. Verify whether a newer edition or amendments exist before use.
