Abstract
Overview
ISO 10262:1998 - "Earth-moving machinery - Hydraulic excavators - Laboratory tests and performance requirements for operator protective guards" defines repeatable laboratory test methods and minimum performance requirements for operator protective guards (top guards and front guards) fitted to hydraulic excavators. The standard evaluates resistance to penetration and deflection under specified impact or loading energies to help ensure reasonable protection of the operator station from falling or approaching objects.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Laboratory evaluation of operator guards for hydraulic excavators (as defined in ISO 7135). Compact excavators ≤ 6 000 kg are excluded from Level II acceptance.
- Guard types:
- Top guard - protects against falling objects.
- Front guard - protects against objects approaching the front.
- Acceptance levels:
- Level I - protection from small objects (e.g., small rocks, debris).
- Level II - protection from large objects (e.g., large rocks, demolition debris).
- Energy requirements:
- Top guard: Level I = 1 365 J, Level II = 11 600 J.
- Front guard: Level I = 700 J, Level II = 5 800 J.
- Drop test objects: Typical masses given - ~46 kg for Level I and ~227 kg for Level II - with defined spherical/tapered contact shapes and specified height/mass combinations (see standard).
- Test methods:
- Top guard - drop tests with free fall object; impact location chosen relative to the deflection-limiting volume (DLV).
- Front guard - static push test (rate ≤ 5 mm/s) recording force and deflection, or optional dynamic test with equivalent energy.
- Deflection-limiting volume (DLV): Used to define acceptable deflection limits relative to the operator’s seating position (SIP). DLV placement and penetration detection methods (indicator material or dynamic instrumentation) are specified.
- Measurement and setup: Measurement accuracy requirements for deflection and requirements for mounting guards to representative machine structures are defined.
Applications and users
- Who uses ISO 10262:1998: excavator manufacturers, protective-guard designers, independent test laboratories, safety and certification bodies, fleet managers, and procurement/specification teams.
- Practical applications:
- Design verification and development of operator protective structures (FOPS/guards).
- Lab testing for product certification and compliance.
- Specifying guard performance for machines used in construction, demolition, landscaping, highway maintenance and other earth‑moving operations.
- Risk mitigation and retrofitting decisions for operator safety.
