ISO 10263-4:2009 specifies a uniform test method for measuring the contribution to operator environmental temperature provided by a heating, ventilating and air conditioning system operating in a specific ambient environment. The method might not determine the complete climatic environment of the operator since this is also affected by heat load from sources other than those on the machine, for example solar heating. ISO 10263-6 is to be used in conjunction with ISO 10263-4:2008 to determine more accurately the complete heat loading on the operator enclosure. Minimum performance levels for the machine's operator enclosure heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems are established in ISO 10263-4:2008.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10263-4:2009 sets a uniform test method and performance requirements for heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in operator enclosures of earth‑moving machinery. The standard measures the HVAC system’s contribution to the operator environment temperature under defined ambient conditions. It complements other parts of the ISO 10263 series (notably ISO 10263‑6 for solar loading) and establishes minimum HVAC performance levels for safe, comfortable operator enclosures.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Measures HVAC effect on operator environmental temperature; does not by itself account for external heat loads (e.g., solar heating).
- Test environment: Field tests or bench tests (with simulation and field correlation) are permitted.
- Operator enclosure pressurization: Maintain between 50 Pa and 200 Pa during tests.
- Fresh filtered air: Minimum of 43 m3/h of filtered fresh air; filters to be at least 96% efficient (per ISO 10263‑2).
- Measurement points: Temperature and wind measurements referenced to the seat index point (ISO 5353); wind speed recommended at the operator eye point.
- Instrument accuracy examples: thermometers ±0.5 °C, anemometers ±0.5 m/s, pressure devices within 5% of observed values.
- Air conditioning test conditions: ambient dry bulb ≥ +38 °C and moisture content ≥ 0.018 kg H2O/kg dry air; pre‑heat soak and loading procedures specified. Minimum AC performance: reduce operator environment dry bulb to ≤ 25 °C.
- Heating test conditions: ambient ≤ –15 °C with a 10‑hour cold soak; minimum heating performance: raise operator environment to ≥ 25 °C.
- Ventilating test conditions: ambient dry bulb ≥ 27 °C; ventilating performance must meet the common test criteria.
- Test termination: when average dry‑bulb change is ≤ 0.5 °C over 15 minutes or after 1 hour.
- Reporting: Test reports must include machine ID, ambient conditions, enclosure pressurization, average enclosure temperature, temperature uniformity, fresh air volume, and solar radiant energy (if used).
Applications and users
ISO 10263‑4:2009 is used by:
- OEMs and suppliers of earth‑moving machinery HVAC systems for product design, verification and certification.
- Test laboratories and R&D teams performing HVAC performance validation and field correlation.
- Procurement and fleet managers evaluating operator comfort, safety and compliance.
- Regulatory bodies and ergonomic assessors referencing operator enclosure climate control standards.
