ISO 10322-2:2016 specifies requirements for the optical and geometrical properties of semi-finished lens blanks with finished progressive-power and degressive-power surfaces.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10322-2:2016 - Ophthalmic optics - Semi-finished spectacle lens blanks, Part 2 specifies the optical and geometrical requirements for semi-finished lens blanks that have a finished progressive-power or degressive-power surface. The standard defines tolerances, test methods and marking/identification rules used by manufacturers, labs and quality assurance teams to ensure compatibility and consistent performance when blanks are finished into spectacles.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to semi-finished lens blanks with finished progressive or degressive surfaces; tolerances are defined at 23 °C ± 5 °C.
- Optical tolerances: Surface power and surface cylindrical power tolerances are specified in dioptres and expressed in the refractive index of the lens material. Typical ranges include:
- Surface power tolerance: for surface power ≥0.00 and ≤10.00 D → ±0.09 D; >10.00 and ≤15.00 D → ±0.12 D.
- Surface addition power (progressive blanks): ≤4.00 D → ±0.12 D; >4.00 D → ±0.18 D.
- Geometrical tolerances: Definitions and limits for nominal, effective and usable sizes (e.g., effective size within d_n −1 mm to d_n +2 mm; usable size limits vary with nominal size). Centre and edge thickness shall not be less than manufacturer’s minimum and shall not exceed it by more than 3 mm. Polarizing blanks require polarizing-plane alignment to permanent marks (90° ± 3°).
- Test methods: Surface power and addition measured by reflection using instruments appropriate to the tolerances; recommended measurement aperture 4–8 mm. Annexes cover material/surface quality inspection (Annex A), refractive-index conversion for instruments (Annex B) and addition measurement by transmission/focimeter alternative (Annex C).
- Marking & packaging: Mandatory permanent marks on the finished surface (alignment references 34 mm apart, addition indication for progressive blanks, manufacturer ID). Package labeling must include nominal surface power, nominal cylinder and nominal size.
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers of semi-finished spectacle lens blanks (quality control, production specifications).
- Optical laboratories / finishing labs that surface and edge blanks into finished spectacle lenses.
- Opticians and spectacle suppliers for procurement and conformity checks.
- Regulatory and quality managers implementing product specifications, inspection procedures and supplier requirements. Practical benefits include consistent finishing outcomes, reduced rework, clear communication of blank properties and reliable interchangeability across suppliers.
