ISO 10326-1:2016 specifies basic requirements for the laboratory testing of vibration transmission through a vehicle seat to the occupant. These methods for measurement and analysis make it possible to compare test results from different laboratories for equivalent seats. It specifies the test method, the instrumentation requirements, the measuring assessment method and the way to report the test result. ISO 10326-1:2016 applies to specific laboratory seat tests which evaluate vibration transmission to the occupants of any type of seat used in vehicles and mobile off-road machinery. Application standards for specific vehicles refer to this document when defining the test input vibration that is typical for the vibration characteristics of the type or class of vehicle or machinery in which the seat is to be fitted. NOTE Examples of application standards are given in the bibliography.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 10326-1:2016 (Mechanical vibration, vehicle seat vibration)
ISO 10326-1:2016 specifies the basic laboratory requirements for evaluating vibration transmission through a vehicle seat to the occupant. It defines how to measure and analyse seat vibration so that results are comparable between laboratories and across equivalent seats. The standard covers test methods, instrumentation requirements, measurement and assessment methods, and how to prepare the test report. It applies to seats used in all types of vehicles and mobile off‑road machinery and is referenced by vehicle‑specific application standards when defining the typical test input vibration.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Scope and objective: Laboratory method for evaluating vehicle seat vibration and transmission to the occupant; comparability of test results.
- Instrumentation requirements: Characteristics of measuring systems (accelerometers, signal conditioning, data acquisition), sensitivity, dynamic range and calibration in accordance with referenced standards.
- Transducer mounting: Precise locations and mounting details for accelerometers on the platform (P), seat pan (S) and backrest (B), including mounting disc dimensions and alignment tolerances.
- Frequency weighting and measurement practice: Use of measurement and assessment methods compliant with ISO 2631-1 and instrument requirements per ISO 8041.
- Vibration equipment and control: Physical characteristics of the vibration simulator and required control system capabilities to reproduce input vibration.
- Test conditions and procedures: Requirements for test seats, run‑in periods for suspension seats, measurement of suspension travel, test persons and posture, simulated input vibration tests, damping tests, and tolerances on input signals.
- Safety and acceptance criteria: Safety requirements for tests involving people and criteria for accepting test results.
- Reporting: Standardized content and format for the test report to ensure repeatability and comparability.
- Annexes: Informative methods (e.g., Annex A on assessing seat suspension over‑travel impacts and Annex B example simulated input signals).
Practical applications and who uses ISO 10326-1
ISO 10326-1 is used by:
- Automotive, agricultural, construction and off‑road vehicle seat designers and manufacturers for seat development and validation.
- Test laboratories and OEMs conducting laboratory seat vibration testing to assess occupant exposure to whole‑body vibration.
- Product certification bodies and suppliers specifying seat performance for vehicle platforms.
- Human factors and occupational health professionals evaluating operator comfort, working efficiency and vibration exposure mitigation.
Practical benefits include consistent comparative data across labs, validated seat suspension performance (including damping and impact control), and a standardized test report for procurement and regulatory use.
