ISO 10771-1:2015 specifies a method of fatigue testing the pressure-containing envelopes of components used in hydraulic fluid power systems under sustained steady cyclic internal pressure loads. This part of ISO 10771 is only applicable to component pressure-containing envelopes that - are manufactured from metals, - are operated at temperatures that exclude creep and low-temperature embrittlement, - are only subjected to pressure-induced stresses, - are not subjected to loss of strength due to corrosion or other chemical action, and - might include gaskets, seals, and other non-metallic components; however, these are not considered part of the pressure-containing envelope being tested (see 5.7). ISO 10771-1:2015 does not apply to piping as defined in ISO 4413 (i.e. connectors, hose, tubing, pipe). See ISO 6803 and ISO 6605 for methods of fatigue testing of piping devices. ISO 10771-1:2015 establishes a general test method that is applicable for many hydraulic fluid power components, but additional requirements or more specific methods that can be required for particular components are contained in the annexes or other standards. Test pressure is to be determined by the user. See ISO/TR 10771‑2 for a possible rating method.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10771-1:2015 - Hydraulic fluid power - Fatigue pressure testing of metal pressure-containing envelopes - Part 1: Test method - specifies a general, repeatable fatigue pressure test method for metal components in hydraulic fluid power systems. It defines how to apply sustained, steady cyclic internal pressure loads to the parts of a component that actually contain pressurized fluid (the pressure-containing envelope). The standard is limited to metallic envelopes operating in temperature ranges that exclude creep and low-temperature embrittlement, and to components not weakened by corrosion or chemical action. Piping is excluded.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Scope & exclusions: Applies to metal pressure-containing envelopes only; excludes piping per ISO 4413. Non-metallic gaskets/seals may be present but are not considered part of the envelope under test.
- Test waveform and cycling: A cyclic pressure waveform is required; the shape is not prescriptive but must achieve specified upper and lower pressure levels and timing clauses (see clause 7.1). Test frequency guidance: f ≤ 3 Hz (time period T ≥ 100 ms) unless validated experience supports higher frequencies.
- Test pressure: Determined by the user; rating methods are referenced in ISO/TR 10771‑2.
- Test preparation:
- Remove entrapped air prior to testing.
- Maintain hydraulic fluid temperature between 15 °C and 80 °C; component minimum 15 °C.
- Use a non-corrosive hydraulic fluid with kinematic viscosity ≤ 60 mm²/s at test temperature.
- Pressure transducers should be mounted directly in or as near as possible to the component to record internal conditions.
- Instrumentation accuracy:
- Pressure: ±1.0% of the upper cyclic test pressure
- Strain: ±1% of value at upper cyclic pressure
- Time resolution and temperature tolerances are specified
- Frequency response requirements for measurement systems (0–2 kHz amplitude ratio)
- Failure criteria: External or internal leakage caused by fatigue, or material separation/cracks.
- Annexes: Normative annexes A–D provide specific requirements for pumps & motors, cylinders, gas‑loaded accumulators and valves.
Practical applications & users
- Who uses it: hydraulic component manufacturers, test laboratories, product designers, reliability engineers and conformity assessors.
- Why use it:
- Verify fatigue resistance of pressure-retaining parts
- Provide comparable test data for component selection in system design
- Support safety and reliability assessments of hydraulic components
- Typical use cases:
- Design validation of hydraulic cylinders, pumps, valves and accumulators
- Quality assurance testing and product development
- Supplier verification testing and certification preparation
