ISO 11077:2014 specifies the general functional, performance, and safety requirements for a self-propelled vehicle equipped with a boom type aerial device and aircraft de-icing/anti-icing fluid (ADF) spraying systems, hereinafter designated as "de-icer". ISO 11077:2014 does not specify a comprehensive set of technical design criteria for aircraft de-icing/anti-icing vehicles, but only those relating to the main functional, safety, and performance requirements. ISO 11077:2014 is not applicable to stationary equipment, e.g. gantries, cranes, used to perform de-icing/anti-icing operations on aircraft.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11077:2014 - Aircraft ground equipment - De-icers - Functional requirements defines the general functional, performance and safety requirements for self‑propelled aircraft de‑icing/anti‑icing vehicles (de‑icers). The standard covers vehicles fitted with a boom‑type aerial device and aircraft de‑icing/anti‑icing fluid (ADF) spraying systems, including operator cabins or baskets, fluid storage/supply and ground hoses. ISO 11077:2014 is focused on minimum essential criteria for safe, usable de‑icers and does not provide a comprehensive set of detailed design rules or apply to stationary de‑icing equipment (e.g., gantries or cranes).
Key topics and technical requirements
ISO 11077:2014 addresses the main functional and safety aspects manufacturers and purchasers must consider:
- Primary function: application of heated de‑icing/anti‑icing fluid from a variable‑height boom around stationary aircraft; hose for ground use is required.
- Vehicle & aerial device: operator cabin or basket on a boom, safe access in stowed position, boom fatigue strength (minimum 2 × 10 stress cycles or 10 000 h operating life‑expectancy as stated), and restrictions on stowed dimensions and manoeuvrability.
- Fluids system: storage tank capacity sized for standard and wide‑body aircraft, pumping and heated fluid delivery options.
- Operating environment: designed to operate satisfactorily between −30 °C and 50 °C and up to 95% relative humidity (unless otherwise agreed).
- Safety & controls: personnel protection, emergency systems, stability and mobility requirements, and control system safety (referencing ISO 6966‑1/2 and ISO 13849‑1).
- Information & marking: manufacturer instructions, markings and user information for safe operation.
- Options & QA: optional features (fluid heaters, mixing systems, fire extinguishing, one‑person operation) and manufacturer/user quality assurance requirements.
Practical applications and users
ISO 11077:2014 is intended for:
- Manufacturers of self‑propelled de‑icers for design verification and product documentation.
- Airport operators and ground handlers selecting or procuring de‑icing vehicles for ramp operations.
- Safety engineers and maintenance teams implementing operational limits, inspection and fatigue management.
- Regulators and procurement specialists assessing conformance to functional and safety expectations for ground support equipment.
The standard helps ensure de‑icing vehicles are safe, operable in typical airport ramp conditions (snow, ice, slush), and compatible with aircraft servicing areas.
