Specifies components and physical parameters of tennis rackets and defines the terminology used. Also specifies laboratory methods for measuring some specioic parameters of tennis rackets and gives guidelines for the indication of these parameters. Does not include the influence of these parameters on the quality of the tennis racket.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11416:1995 - "Tennis rackets - Racket components and physical parameters" defines the terminology, components and measurable physical parameters of tennis rackets and frames. The standard specifies laboratory measurement methods for parameters such as grip size, string area, racket length, mass, balance point and moments of inertia, and gives guidelines for how these parameters should be indicated. It does not address how those parameters affect racket quality or playing performance.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Definitions and components: clear terms for racket parts (grip, shaft, heart, shoulder, head, raw frame, strings, string protection).
- Measurement conditions: test samples conditioned at 23 °C ± 2 °C for at least 2 hours (reference to ISO 554:1976).
- Grip size: measured with a flexible steel tape (tape details and marking instructions); can be indicated in millimetres or by table designation; conversion to inches via 25.4 mm/in.
- String area: measured on millimetre‑squared paper; may be reported in cm² or as a percentage above a 440 cm² reference or by size category (standard / mid‑size / super mid‑size / oversize). Convert cm² to in² by dividing by 6.45.
- Racket length and mass: length measured with ±1 mm device; mass measured with a scale ±1 g; indicated values must meet specified tolerances (see standard).
- Balance point: located relative to the grip end; test uses a prism and pivot 100 mm from grip end.
- Moments of inertia (Ix, Iy, Iz): laboratory pendulum and oscillation methods described (pivot 100 mm from grip for Iy/Iz; x‑axis oscillation using wire suspension and reference disc). Timing accuracy for oscillation tests: 0.1 s for 10 swings; recommended wire lengths and disc mass ranges are provided.
- Indication and labelling: rules for reporting values, acceptable deviations, and required information in test reports (manufacturer, model, measured values, deviations, tester signature).
Applications and users
Who uses ISO 11416:1995:
- Tennis racket manufacturers and designers - to standardize measurement and labelling of physical racket data.
- Test laboratories and quality control teams - to ensure comparable, repeatable measurements.
- Retailers and importers - to verify and communicate technical data on products.
- Sports equipment certifiers and researchers - for documented measurement procedures and reporting.
Practical uses:
- Producing certified datasheets and labels for rackets and frames.
- Comparing physical parameters across models and brands using consistent laboratory methods.
- Supplying standardized measurements for secondary analyses (e.g., ergonomic or performance studies), while noting the standard does not evaluate playability.
